2020.09.21 08:22 dancechic417 this season is too short

love island US need to make the next season longer. this season has ~34 episodes (according to wikipedia) whereas the more recent seasons of Love Island UK have upwards of 49 episodes. the longer the season is, the more amount of time the islanders feel they can date around. I feel like with this group they felt they had such a limited amount of time, many of them were closed off to new islanders (notice the last dumping featured 3 CA contestants). at this point most of the islanders are either waiting to just get sent home or scrambling to find someone they can successfully fake a genuine connection with.

BURKE LAPADURA
Mad eyes
Mad eyes introduction: Burke is the eldest son of a construction worker who grew up playing amongst designs, various machines, and tools. By the time he was 20, he had already acquired local fame for his skills. Hired by a married couple, Burke arrived at Oletus Manor when it was still desolate, rundown and was responsible for most of the architectural designs. As per the wishes of his employer, he led his team of workers and expanded Oletus Manor. In his own time, he added his own touch to the manor, his devices, turning the manor into Burke's secret laboratory. It is said that even up until that unfortunate incident this crazy architect was still planning the addition of new devices.

This analysis will include: a dissection of Burke's deductions in history, a brief history of the development of prostheses, revisiting the abandoned setting of the manor, whiskey and pressure gauges.
Design:
Burke's design is mechanical, and slightly reminiscent of steampunk. Despite how unrealistic and stylized his design may appear to be, it actually holds some significant footing in reality. I'll discuss it in points
  1. His prosthesis -
Burke's right hand and left leg have both been replaced with mechanical parts - More commonly referred to as a prosthesis. It's never explained how he lost these limbs - we do however know that the area where he lives has poachers and dangerous traps so it's possible one of these could have contributed to it, but since it's never stated it's also possible he could have purposefully chosen to replace them as he aged. Regardless as to why his prosthetics appear to be fairly rudimentary. Currently there exists certain prosthetics which can sense electrical impulses in the remaining muscles around it and based off of where the impulse is it can move the prosthetic in a certain way. Considering this technology is fairly recent to the current day Burke's prosthesis is most likely a body powered device which relies on the coordinated movements of the user’s own residual and healthy limbs to drive. To be fair the movement of his fingers do appear to be far more coordinated than a body power device would allow but considering he is a mechanical genius I think we can suspend our disbelief a little. In fact most historical prostheses used residual limbs and specific movements to operate most efficiently.
https://www.amputee-coalition.org/history-prosthetic-leg/
Also, if you look closely, you can see that Burk’s prosthesis has rubber bumpers.
The Civil War may have helped spawn the first major explosion of the United States’ prosthetic device industry. About 70 percent of all wounds sustained by Civil War soldiers affected their limbs which often resulted in amputation. The ghastly nature of the condition of many soldiers returning from conflict led to the federal government taking action in the form of its “Great Civil War Benefaction” program. This little-remembered project made a commitment on behalf of the government to provide prosthetic devices to every Civil War soldier who needed one. As such there were numerous manufacturers building devices on government contracts and the need for these synthetic limbs helps spurred innovation. Beginning in 1863, rubber began to find use along with, or instead of, wood and metal, providing a more natural appearance, better resiliency and more flexibility.
The introduction of rubber in leg prosthetic sockets grew in popularity thanks to New York inventor Dubois Parmelee in 1863. His socket attached to the residual limb using atmospheric pressure, and india rubber was used to comfortably adjust to a patient’s residual limb
Therefore, the time point when Burk replaced his prosthesis was most likely around late 1860s. I specify "replaced" because in his deductions when we first meet him it's most likely around the early 1800s so he either had a different form of prosthesis or was in full fit condition.

https://www.ipwatchdog.com/2014/12/01/the-evolution-of-prosthetic-devices-a-patent-history/id=52227/
  1. His console -
Now that I've harped about his prosthetic let's shift our focus to some other identifying aspects. The "keyboard" used to enter data onto his consoles appears to be altered form of a typewriter. Between 1801 and 1808, Italian Pellegrino Turri invented the first typewriter for his blind friend. Later this typewriter was lost, so it is impossible to know its shape and structure today. The first machine known as the typewriter was patented on 23rd June 1868, by printer and journalist Christopher Latham.
  1. Pressure gauge -
The pressure gauge on the Barker weapon belongs to the Bourdon tube pressure gauge, which is the earliest and most commonly used mechanical pressure measuring instrument. French engineer Eugene Bourdon first invented the Bourdon gauge in 1849. The device enabled accurate measurement of much higher pressures than existing measurement devices. Bourdon designed the device for steam locomotive engines in the late 1840s because of the increasing number of horrific accidents involving very high-pressure steam locomotive engines. The accident rate and number of deaths from steam engine explosions dropped significantly within a couple of years of the introduction of the Bourdon gauge.
https://blog.wika.us/products/pressure-products/eugene-bourdon-history-bourdon-gauge/
Bark’s pressure gauge is probably used to directly measure the steam inside his weapon, to prevent it from bursting suddenly. But why does his weapon need to have pressure in the first place? if he's able to control when steam is released, then the force of the steam exiting the weapon would help to increase the speed and force of his attack. You have to remember he has cute little toothpick arms, and a prosthesis doesn't really provide you much grip, so these alterations to his weapon can give him an advantage. Additionally steam is hot, at atmospheric pressure liquid water transitions to steam 212°F (that's 100°C), according to The burn foundation, just one second at 156° F (69°C) can cause third degree burns. Researchers in Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA) found the epidermis (the outer layer of skin), cannot properly perform its protective function against water vapour as high temperature vapor easily penetrates to the second layer of skin easily causing second degree burns.
(https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/05/180514122556.htm#:~:text=Why%20the%20epidermis%20does%20not%20protect%20against%20steam&text="The%20steam%20penetrates%20through%20the,triggers%20second-degree%20burns)
however under the pressure within Burke's weapon the damage caused gets even worse. It takes about 16.67 bar to crush an egg as seen in this experiment (17 kg converts to 16.67 bar)
https://youtu.be/YP_UBNwEoGs
According to valves online temperature steam reference, assuming this measly pressure alone could increase the temperature of the steam up to 204°C or about 400°F, to put this in perspective frying grease is often between 300 and 500°F interested by the American burn association can cause serious degree burns in less than one second. I know people despise getting hit by Mad eye walls but considering the alternative it might be the less painful option.

  1. Burke's alcohol -
The most common orange-yellow liquor in the UK is whiskey, and because the grain law was abolished at that time, the price of various brewing materials was lowered, and the liquor was cheaper than before.
One of the sources I looked into while researching suggested that Burke may have created his one bottle himself due to the fact that before the 17th century the shapes of wine bottles were mostly blowing by independent craftsmen and after not many wineries created them until much later. But my research into the topic makes me think that the dates simply don't line up. The 1600s was far earlier than when this story takes place, I find it more likely that his bottle could be a gin case bottle: Case gin bottles are square with a more or less distinct taper inwards from the shoulder to the base. This design closely aligns with that of Burke's bottle, in the color of gin it said to have a slightly yellow tint, but in the promotional art for mad eyes we could see that his bottle contains a vividly orange liquid. Could be a decorative flask which would mean that Burke made it or had a friend do so, The only thing which makes me reluctant on this possibility is that most decorative flasks have designs on them, but Burke's appears rather basic. considering that the time frame for the bottle fits that of the case gin bottles it wouldn't be too far of a stretch too assume that this was the bottle he used and he simply filled it with a different liquid. After all his character day notes say that one of his favorite things is vodka which definitely doesn't fit the description of what would be in the bottle.
Whatever he's drinking and regardless of how many alcoholic problems he had he's precious.

  1. What is a "Burke"? -
The surname Burke is derived from the Old English word "burh," which is derived from the Old German word "burg," the common Germanic word for a fortification. It seems likely that the first family to bear this surname would have lived in or near a prehistoric fort situated on a hill.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.houseofnames.com/amp/burke-family-crest
This name is rather apt considering who Burke is. In a literal sense He's able to construct walls to keep out people he deems as intruders. But on a deeper level he's built a fortification around himself.
  1. Snazzy Accessories -
While this isn’t directly related to his design some of his accessories reveal to us more about his character
Good Old Times -
“A watering can that Burke discovered while tidying up the laboratory. It was full of flowers and plants which reminded him of days gone by.”
Violin -
“His right hand may not be fully functional and his violin may have been slightly damaged in an incident, but Burke enjoys music still. Practice really does make perfect.”
(shows that the loss of his arm came later on in his life and that he had some interesting talents)

To be an architect (a brief exploration into the architecture tendencies of the time):
The Manor was built on speculation (meaning it was built without any intended buyers).
Now we've never seen the entirety of the manner which means that we can only piece together what we know of it from the sections where we explore pieces of the inside and from parts of external view.
What we do know is that around the time the manor was sold for a fairly cheap price, these types of estates were symbols of status which shows that while these people may not have been the most wealthy they did come from a significant social standing.
https://www.infoplease.com/encyclopedia/history/modern-europe/middle-ages/manorial-system/history#:~:text=Gradual%20decline%20took%20place%20with,Middle%20Ages%20(see%20commune%20).
The background of the manor was originally designed with aspects of the 20th century, but based on many deductions and later official changes, the background in the game can be determined to occur in the 19th century. The 19th century was a period of great popularity of romanticism, and under the influence of it, architectural changes also took place-called romantic architecture. The 1830s to 1860s was the early stage of the development of romantic architecture, also known as pre-romanticism. Medieval castle-style mansions and even Eastern architectural sketches appeared.
https://architecture_history.enacademic.com/255/ROMANTIC_ARCHITECTURE
It has been stated that he may be inspired by Edmund Burke, a Canadian architect from the 19th and 20th century. But this is a loose connection. But he has done some gothic revival and similar style buildings
The background
Next, let’s talk about a background story that may be related to Barker’s deduction. This is the manor’s background story previously released by the official WeChat account, but there are many omissions, which have now been deleted. However, if you compare the cannon with this background you'll see some interesting similarities that correlate to Burke
[Background story that was later scrapped]
Everything starts with Winston Manor (also known as Oulitis Manor):
In the 20th century in Europe, a young couple bought a huge estate in a remote mountain area at a low price. The reason why this manor was so cheap is because the reputation this manor had was not very good (because of the rumors of the past generations) and because of the bad reputation, there were no neighbors around.
After the couple moved into the manor, they renovated the manor, they enjoy Western mythology, which is why the manor is full of it

Just when everyone thought that this family would live a happy life forever, something that no one wanted to mention happened: 24 years ago, the protagonist ushered in his 12th birthday, which was originally a happy thing. However, on this day, the protagonist experienced the saddest thing in the world-he witnessed the brutal murder of his parents by bandits, and the cause of this tragic case was only: the impromptu killings of the surrounding refugees because of the theft. They deliberately created a cruel crime scene afterwards in an attempt to disrupt the clues.
(keep in mind this background story was scrapped although parts of it may still be true)
https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/35774811
Here's the link to the full story if you'd like to read it.
The owner of the manor that we see first strongly relates to the deross family we see and Burke's deductions. I'll start going over those here.
Mad eyes deduction
  1. Contract - It used to be a proper job.
Damaged Contract: Signed by Dennis DeRoss and Burke Lapadura.
Combining the background story mentioned earlier, after the couple bought the manor, they started looking for an architect who could work to rebuild it. Burke was young and arrogant, and had a certain reputation, not afraid of the ominous rumors that had spread around the manor he decided to take on the opportunity to work there and pursue his design goal. Considering the reputation that the manor had (as noted in the background story), many workers were dissuaded from pursuing employment at the manor. Due to this, it was the once fearless and talented Burke who undertook most of the architectural design work.
  1. Test Ground - Some saw ruins, while I saw "potential".
Archive 1: Attached are architectural plans for symmetrical towers. A rectangular area is marked in red at the center of the building.
Generally speaking, in regards to architectural designs, red and rectangular marks have special meanings
For example, it can be used to reserve a column position (as is seen in this picture)
This means that, for whatever reason, the floor should be reserved during construction. According to the location, the red rectangle on Barker's drawing may refer to the secret room or safe room that is mentioned later in his deductions. In short, the work entrusted to him by the couple gave full play to his talents and gave him free reign of his architectural abilities, this was an enjoyable endeavor for Burke to undertake.
  1. Labor Force - Robots are more reliable than humans.
Archive 2: Archived drawings of a strange humanoid structure. It seems that hundreds of parts need to be made to complete the design.
As mentioned earlier, most of the design tasks in the manor are done by him alone, and there are many bad rumors about the manor (so maybe not many people are willing to work here), and Burke is not the type who likes to communicate with people. In this case, what he thought of was to make his own form of labor that could help him, aka robots. The specific humanoid structure mentioned in this deduction most likely refers to Guard 26 or BonBon, a metal penguin which he is responsible for creating to help him with his tasks.
  1. Strange Kid - I don't like those noisy living creatures. They give me headaches.
Diary 1: Mr. and Mrs. DeRoss made new building requests, and they even bought their own staff. There was also a strange boy in this annoying group who showed great interest in my studio. I have to find a way to keep him away from my treasures.
Even if he is obsessed with architecture, burke is still very sensitive to changes in the world outside of his direct hobbies. From his point of view the child is getting in his way and putting himself into dangerous situations due to his excessive curiosity
The DeRoss couple seem to care for Burke. But Burke, most likely around his twenties at the time and potentially still a child from the perspective of the older DeRoss couple, obviously only wants to work on his own and in solitude.
A popular theory (translated by @mayousailor on Twitter from @sky5memo - link below) is that The staff the DeRoss family brought included the family of the "strange boy" as he is stated to be "among" the group. The 4th deduction of bonbon supports this: "The little rascal’s gone and misplaced some valuable things again, after coming back from his 'true' parents". One interpretation if this is that he's stealing things for his biological family. Despite who his biological family is, we know the child is at the very least the children the DeRoss's to some extent, most likely through adoption.
In bane's character day letter (and in BonBon's 6th deduction) we get to see that bane is connected to Burke though his occupation on the manor as the gamekeeper. In the letter he states:
"You haven’t come out of the laboratory in almost a month, and the Young Miss - who I'll get to later - and Young Master have started to run into the woods."
If the boy is the young master that means that he has to have some status above that of a common worker.
The assumption that the boy was the son of servants, but eventually adopted by Dennis and his wife, makes this make a lot more sense.
By the way, if you use Mad Eyes in the game, turn the screen to the side and you can see that Burke has a pair of very lovely green eyes. he should have been very handsome when he was young (after all, children are preceptive to appearance and a handsome face will likely gain favor with them, who knows? It could have played a role in why the young boy liked him)
  1. Secret Chamber - Is there a safer place than a room you can't find?
Diary 2: That kid is so annoying. Every time I look back, I can always see his clothes or shoes sticking out from the corner. What an idiot.
With more and more people moving in, the manor is gradually approaching its completion, although Burke is still being hired to continue the expansion work. After mulling over the situation, he decided to move much of his work into the secret room, thinking that he would not be discovered by others working there (is there a safer place than a room that can’t be found?" I think my plan is great!). A potential theory for why he decided to move into this room could have just been that he preferred to work on the tasks that he knew he had to complete in solitude - and with the house growing more populated his room provided him a sanctuary.
But one of the many impossibilities of children is that they have an amazing perception. The secret room Burke spent so long constructing and hiding was easily found by the boy. The child would often secretly watch Burke working in this room. Maybe he wanted to be able to play with Burke (after all, his sister was not born yet so he was possibly lonely), and Burke - unlike the other servants - hasn't had much contact with the child, so it is understandable that he'd be curious. Burke's account explains that he can tell that the child's watching him and he says he finds it annoying - however he never actually does anything to stop him from observing his work.
Burke's words and actions are contradictory but help show who he is as a person - he is strict in his tone, but soft in his heart: Although he said that the child is very annoying and stupid, he did not reprimand the boy or drive him away, but silently complained while indulging the boys curiosity.
  1. Number 26 - This is a breakthrough.
Test Record 1: After No. 26 was instructed to take Wooden Box 1, No. 26 stopped moving after taking Wooden Box 1. After No. 26 was instructed to take any numbered Wooden Box except Box 1, No. 26 left the experimental zone after taking the boxes and began to move towards the unnumbered boxes.
Bark’s experiment (No.26) has made new progress. The 26th iteration of his invention is finally somewhat successful and has a certain degree of autonomy, the robot picks up its designated boxes, within proceeds to pick up boxes which aren't even in the testing zone, contributing that it has the ability to carry out actions it's not programmed with. This will be further explained when I do the video on BonBon, but Burke's creation is something he himself has yet to fully comprehend.
  1. Another - I should have seen it coming.
Diary 3: Darn it, humans will reproduce. I should remember that well. My employer was a young couple, and of course, they had children! The only thing to be grateful for was that the brat's attention was completely diverted to "Miss DeRoss", because that gave me time to finish my work. (Optimize secret room)
Time passed, and the boy had his own sister (the child the young couple gave birth to) and everyone's attention was focused on "Miss Delos" - which is the name of the baby. There were no children to bother for a while, and Burke began to optimize his secret room (aka man cave) and guard 26.
  1. Small issue - They will never surprise me anymore.
Test Record 2: After No. 26 was given the command to start, it started playing a voice that was never input. Curse those brats! Miss DeRoss, in particular, should stay away from my Robots! They don't need names like cats and dogs.
Burke continued his experiments. During this time, he was continuing work on Guard 26, his Magnum opus. "Miss Deros" had also grown up with her brother, and had become a new headache for poor Burke. They take to giving names befitting pets to his creations. Most notably when the little girl gives guard 26 the name BonBon, which the robot files in his memory banks. Burke find these names childish and he is seen in some of BonBon's deductions trying to erase this name from his memory bank.
What's even more interesting is how he responds in tweets. Idv Twitter in Japan likes to post character responses to questions and statements posted by fans. Pascal/uranatte (link to his Twitter in description and his koi-fi or you can support is good work and translations if you'd like)

“Bonbon” comes from the “Bom” of “Bomb”, not from bonbon the candy……
…… Anyways, its name isn’t Bonbon in the first place!!
It’s No. 26!!
Here mad eye gets defensive about how his name is in reference to his bombs. He seems to act as if he doesn't like guard 26's nickname but he is quick to defend it.
Q:
“Banban becoming a Mister Bear is so cute. I’m looking forward to it Penpen”
A:
It’s neither Banban nor Mister Bear and it’s not Penpen either!!
It’s Bonbon!!
………………………………
…… Wait, no!!
It’s No. 26!!
Here Burke is shown slipping up and calling him bonbon himself. He may not like the name but at least in some subconscious part of him it stuck.
Burke's daily life in the old manor was probably like this often, having to deal with kids giving his inventions silly little names. despite his stated distaste for it he never actually does anything significant to stop them and doesn't really start seriously changing BonBon until after the incident (which will be mentioned later) he is a very warm guy but seems to be having a headache from everyone's stupidity 24/7
  1. The mob - Human's stupidity always amazes me.
Target:
Deduction: Diary 4: They took everyone, including the children. I should have set the Robot to guard this place. It's too late, it's far too late.
The story here should correspond to the gangster in the original background story:
24 years ago, the protagonist ushered in his 12th birthday. This was originally a happy thing, but on this day, the protagonist experienced the saddest thing in the world. He witnessed the brutal murder of his parents by bandits, but the cause of this tragic case was only: the impromptu homicide of the surrounding refugees because of the theft, they deliberately created a cruel crime scene afterwards in order to disturb the clues.
Of course, there is a big discrepancy between Burke's deduction and this, for example, in Burke's cannon telling not only was the couple killed, but everyone except himself (supposedly). There are some significant differences between them but what's important is the continuity: That the manor was overrun by a mob and people died.
But the weird thing is that in that historical period, would there be such a big riot in Britain?
A search for riots in Britain around that time shows some potential candidates:
Swing Riots were a widespread uprising in 1830 by agricultural workers in southern and eastern England, in protest at agricultural mechanisation and harsh working conditions. This time period is a few decades before the time suggested by his appearance, but there is a long gap between the end of his deduction story and his time as a hunter, so there is a significant possibility that these riots could be responsible for what happened.
The Bread Riots 1847 to 1867. Resulting in the price of bread rising steeply, and this, in turn, led to a feeling of discontent. Ultimately rioting broke out against shopkeepers and angry citizens. These riots take place later on and are less likely to be the cause of the one faced by Burke and the DeRoss family.
Both of these riots may not be directly related, but the poor working conditions at the time which spurred these riots may have played a role in the one we see with the manor. It is possible the DeRoss family was simply swept up against an angry mob that held destain for those of a higher economic status due to conditions for those in poverty at the time.
(!): It’s Miss Teros and likely the boy that came with the workers.
  1. Sentinel - Ah, such a long wait, but they’ll be back, won’t they?
Archive 3: Archived drawings of a strange humanoid structure. Lots of new parts that look like weapons were added.
(According to the background story that may be changed,) Later the manor received a new owner. The new owner was different from the previous family, but he was willing to take in Burke, who had lost his job and "family". Burke continued to work at the manor, doing some basic reconstruction.
He continued to experiment in the manor while waiting for the family in the past to return here. He blamed himself for their disappearance because he was unable to protect them as he always wanted to do. In the second Bonbon deduction it's revealed that Burke created him in part to help with "babysit" the kids, the 6th deduction shows that he tweaked the bomb function in order to help defend the kids who had a tendency for wandering in the dangerous poacher filled forest.
But BonBon wasn't set to protect when the attack happened, so the family was defenseless. Burke took refuge in his safe room, but for whatever reason (whether it be out of stubbornness, fear, or simply that Burke possibly never informed them of the place) the family faced the threat head on. After this disaster, Burke refused to commit previous mistakes, he added a large number of weapon parts to his machines - new and old. He built them to possess immeasurable firepower, so that even children can be protected. Maybe they will never come back, maybe they will return to the manor tomorrow. With this idea, Bark has been waiting, gradually aging, and making himself look completely different from the past through modification. But if they do have a return, seeing Burke today, could they even recognize that this was once their talented architect, that this was once their "family"
As it turns out Burke's hope isn't entirely misplaced. The name of the father of the DeRoss family is Dennis (as he is referred to), however in other characters deductions there's mention of another character in the family who commonly goes by "Barron DeRoss" and is no one to be the owner of the manor. (@sky5memo on Twitter proposes something interesting)
https://twitter.com/sky5memo?s=09
((Please note that this was originally in Japanese and was translated by the previously mentioned Pascal, again links for him are down below)). He states that Barron de Ross may actually be the (supposedly) adopted son we read about in Burke's deductions - implying that he never died. The evidence to support this theory can be found in Martha's character day letter to Barron DeRoss where she writes:
"Do not forget the tragedy that happened to your family."
In addition to this the Second Anniversary Pack. Contained within it some pretty interesting information. Contained in the pack is a story titled "Letter to an Older Brother", from the DeRosses' daughter. The title of this letter itself implies that the son eventually became welcomed into the family if he wasn't their child to begin with.
In the letter is this quote (please keep in mind that Pascal translated this from Japanese, but it originally had to have been translated it from Chinese, so it may be a little off):
"Please don't blame yourself for the death of my parents; You loved them even more than I did, didn't you? And I know you tried your hardest to help them, too. The fact that I'm even alive now is proof of that."
This essentially cements the fact that Dennis DeRoss and his wife were killed by the brutal mob depicted in Burke and Bonbon's deductions. The boy officiously fought to protect the daughter which would explain how she survived.
As for Martha's letter, if we assume that Baron DeRoss is actually this adopted servant boy, the statement regarding the tragedy that befell his family makes more sense.
In addition bonbon's 9th deduction reveals that in the mob attacking the manor there were "familiar faces" in the crowd. While this may be referring to the dangerous poachers that had been seen by the family before, it makes more sense that it was the family of the servant boy as it was extremely likely that the mob took place due to issues of economic status and class. In an attack like this, a servant family would be more likely to participate than some poachers.
To summarize this part: we can theorize that the young girl and boy both managed to escape the attack from the mob thanks to courageous actions from the boy. The boy seems to blame himself for the death of the parents and the young girl wants to console him for it stating that he loved them even more than she did. This boy could have grown up to become Barron DeRoss, however this is not 100% certain. There's also the possibility that all the characters who mention Barron DeRoss are referring to the father before the incident took place.
In addition other letters from different characters reveal more information about Barron DeRoss.
Jack for instance notes in his character day letter that his mentor - James - was good friends with Barron DeRoss, however, due to a weakening body, he wasn't able to go meet him in person and thusly sent Jack in his stead.
In addition to The previously mentioned quote from this letter about not forgetting the tragedy that befell the Barron's family- Martha's letter contains more interesting clues. It appears as if she sent the letter regarding a job opportunity that seems to have some sketchy undertones. She essentially asked him to create for her a new identity in exchange for working for him.
The magician's letter reveals that Baron DeRoss decided to get in contact with servias about a “missing gentleman”. Not much is revealed about the context of this.
In Robbie's character letter which is sent from an nun from the orphanage where he attended it is revealed that the Baron is an expert in mental illness (it is possible the mental trauma experienced by his sister due to the mob incident spurred him pursue this field of study, or conversely if the Baron's identity is the father it's possible that he was already an expert in this field). it is also stated that he may intend to donate to the facility - showing that he's a man of wealth.
This is just a simple summary for these character letters, and I will explain more about them should I do videos on their character stories individually, But what they essentially reveal is that the Baron is a powerful man. It's unknown if Burke finds out later in his life that anyone survived the attack, But the last piece of information were given from Burke's perspective is that he's waiting patiently at the manner in hopes that they had survived, an in hopes will one day return.
This regret Burke feels is reflected more in some of his other Twitter responses:

(Translations sourced from Pathcal)
Q:
Response to the Valentine's day event
A:
"I see, today was Valentines’ Day, was it.
Thanks for doing all this for someone like me.
It’s almost like… like having grandkids…"
Q:
“So Burke-san’s face looks like this…”
A:
"Why, have I never shown it to you?
Well, it’s fine either way.
Appearances are, for both people and machines alike,
Just ways of hiding that they’re empty inside.
All that’s important is what they’re like deep down, and nothing else."
Q:
“Every time I see this skin this is what I think…… I wonder if Grampy Burke is feeling hot…… Don’t get burned okay… Take care, Grampy Burke……”
A:
What in the… No need for worryin’!
Why, to think you’d care, what a sweet grandki……
… Wait a minute, I don’t remember having grandkids!
Extra little tidbits:
This is just an interesting interaction from the Twitter account I couldn't really tie in elsewhere -
Q:
“So Burke-san’s face looks like this…”
A:
"Why, have I never shown it to you?
Well, it’s fine either way.
Appearances are, for both people and machines alike,
Just ways of hiding that they’re empty inside.

There's something to be said about recognizing the importance of what's on the inside. Burke never was really fascinated with appearance despite how he probably looked rather attractive in his youth. (Joseph could take a lesson from him) ((and I oop-))
His character day hasn't happened yet but I'll probably make a comment for it when it does. Till then I'll put down what I know
The character day is: November 27th
His occupation: architect
Interests: Machines, mechanisms, buildings
Talents: Machines, mechanisms, buildings
dislikes: People who destroy buildings and use the facilities without permission
Likes: Machines, mechanisms, buildings, VODKA (yeah boys)
Burke is one of the few hunters with a known surname, along with Bane Perez, Joseph Desaulniers and Leo Beck.
He is 1 of only 3 Difficulty Level 3 Characters, the others being William Ellis and Yidhra.
Now that I'm nearing the end I think I'll propose my answer to one last question - what's his purpose in hunting? If I were to guess I would say that in his eyes his hunting is done to protect the manor. He wasn't invited here to kill people, he may not have been invited here at all, what's known for certain is that he never left, he's always been here. He spent years regretting his decision to watch everything happen in hiding, in this time it's not going to be that way again. Everyone else is invading his sanctuary and this time he's not going to hide. He'll fight to protect his home.
I want to give credit to these people for a lot of the information presented here.

2020.09.20 17:40 alexac8 [REQUEST][Steam] Arizona Sunrise

https://store.steampowered.com/app/342180/Arizona_Sunshine/
https://steamcommunity.com/id/AlexCheckley/

I sit in dead silence working on my maths homework, question number 22 - Exponentials and logarithms. Since question 5 my productivity has been rapidly decreasing thanks to boredom and cramps in my hand.

The silence is broken by a sharp crackle of white noise followed by a harrowing call of, “Mayday, mayday, mayday”. The voice sounded distant and despondent. Engrossed in my work, I don’t notice the first call, the second call sounds, “Mayday, mayday, mayday. This is survivor group 16F requesting immediate assistance. We are one member down and they're closing in on our location. Over”.

I sit staring at my work, listening to the radio transmission. The words resonate in my head. Work? Radio? Radio! I scramble from my chair over to my amateur radio set and put on the headset.

“G532 receiving loud and clear, what’s your twenty? Over”, as I release the transmission button, I hear a blood-curdling scream from outside. Stretching the headset cable to its max I rip open my curtains and look out into the darkness. Aside from a flickering street light, there is nothing. Flicker, flicker, off, the street light goes out entirely and the street is black.

The voice speaks again, “Arizona, USA. 20 miles out from Tuba City. Over”. I begin to close the curtains when another scream rings out in the street. This is followed by footsteps, a crowd? A gentle murmur can be heard coming closer and closer. Suddenly the streetlight illuminates, brighter and brighter, before “POP”, the bulb blows. In that split second of light, I saw the source of the scream.

The young girl was running down the middle of the road, her teddy dragged by one arm behind her. Just one-meter back there was a shadow. A large group of adults stumbling and falling behind her. There was something not quite right about the people though, it was almost as if they looked lifeless. They were moving, can’t deny that, but their eyes looked distant.

“16F do you copy? I can’t provide assistance but will seek to get you help. Over.” I could faintly make out the figure of the girl, the gap between her and the hoard gradually shrinking.

No response. “16F Arizona, do you copy?”. I rip off the headset and reach for my paper bin. Retching, I think over what I just saw. The young girl, no more than 6, couldn’t run any longer. She was swallowed by the group, into the darkness. Her final cry for help was silenced by a sickening bone crunch.

Standing up, I grab my flashlight and at the back of my bedside drawer, my hunting knife. Running out of my room I see my parents coming up the stairs.

“Shouldn’t you be working?”

“Where are you going at this time of the night?”

I squeeze past them on the stairs, ignoring their questions. Homework can wait, exams can wait. Its time to kill zombies!

The front door is open so I run at full speed towards it. As I reach it, I am knocked to the ground. An invisible wall is blocking my exit. I try again, this time more cautiously, again, I cannot leave.

A large grey box floats in front of me, on it are eight large words.

ARIZONA SUNSHINE IS NOT IN YOUR GAME LIBRARY

-The end

TLDR; School is super stressful at the moment and I want to kill zombies.
Backstory: I’m currently in my second year of A-levels (UK exams that get you into University). Year one went fine but the online learning over quarantine and the increase in stress from nearing deadlines and application dates have taken a real toll on my mental health. I’m at the lowest point I think I’ve ever been – I always used to know where my life was going, and now I’m not so sure.
During quarantine, I was lucky enough to get a small job with a family friend. Restoring an old Royal train carriage of all things! Using the money, I saved from this I have pre-ordered an Oculus Quest 2. I have wanted the quest one ever since it was first released, so I was so happy when the newer version was released, and for less than the quest 1! My hope is that the separation from the real world and the virtual world might put my mind to rest for a little while.
I would be really happy with any VR game and there's a few that I am going to start saving towards, but I chose Arizona Sunrise as my request today as it is currently on sale on steam for another 25ish hours. This means that I could get a great game for the least money.
Hopefully, once I have got through my exams and sorted out my life, I can return the favour to the ‘gifter’ or someone else in need.
Thanks for reading 😊 Cheers, Alex

2020.09.19 23:05 pog99 Alternative Hypothesis/ Ryan Faulk distorts South Africa under Apartheid.

Originally, my plan was to continue on with his article on Slavery in the United States. However, United Left, and some previous posts of mine, more or less already debunk the picture he paints in that article. I still plan to address though at a later date.
This article, perhaps even better than the last, show how thin Faulk's objectivity is. He opens and closes as if he was actually being holistic, but instead leaves a specimen blatant rationalization over a topic common among right-wing circles, the racial history and politics of South Africa. Lets not waste time.

The impact of European colonialism on the world is often described as being profoundly negative. The popular view is that Europeans came, stole resources, destroyed cultures, and committed mass murder all over the earth. By contrast, the prevailing view 100 years ago was that Europe was supplying the world with advanced institutions which they would not develop on their own and, in so doing, was civilizing the world.
Either of these theories might be true, and, to some extent, they both are. It is obviously correct that Europe took resources from places, killed some number of people, and ended various indigenous cultural practices. It is also obviously true that Europe set up various institutions, such as capitalism and democracy, in various parts of the world which had not developed these things on their own.
Does he think state control over, say, African labor during colonialism is Capitalism? Or that limiting Local chiefs from legislation such as in Colonial Nigeria is democracy?
A broad look at the empirical evidence suggests that European colonization helped most people more than it hurt them. Research has shown that the longer, or more heavily, a place was colonized by Europeans the richer it ended up being today (Eaverly and Levine, 2012; Feyrer and Sacerdote, 2006). Moreover, in the 20th century Africa, which is the center of much of the colonization debate, saw tremendous net gains in both wealth and population size (Manning, 2013; Roser; 2016)
Going through each of these, The Easterly study mainly looks at economic growth, and honestly doesn't suffice to explain the specific of African colonial experience in that regard. The second study notes how specific conditions of colonialism influences growth, while the two figures on African population growth shows this to be particularly so in the Post colonial era. Few would consider the first decades of African independence to be embodied by these numbers.
Here's an actual balanced set of studies and explanation on Colonialism in Africa.
I find this broad view compelling, but discussions on colonialism are rarely about the broad view. Instead, people like to talk about the anecdotal experiences of particular countries at particular times, and no anecdote is more often talked about than South African apartheid.
In this article, I will examine the history of South Africa as a case study in European colonialism.
Correction: You will gloss over it in a way that reflects your political biases.
Black Origins
The earliest people known to have occupied South Africa were a type of African called Khosians. Khosians are not the group of people most people think of when they think of Black South Africans. Those are Bantus. Bantu Africans and Khosians Africans look different, traditionally spoke different languages, and lived different sorts of lives. If we turned the clock back 4 thousand years, we would find that the southern half of the African continent was almost entirely inhabited by Khosians.
Some time roughly 3,000 years ago, Bantu Africans began expanding out of eastern and central Africa. As they expanded, they displaced many of the African peoples who had previously lived there. The degree to which this expansion occurred via violence, disease, out breeding, or other means, is unknown.
By 1,000 AD, the Bantu had reached most of South Africa. However, most of the people there were still Khosians. When the Portuguese arrived in South Africa in the 1400’s, they encountered very few Bantu.
As the Bantu expanded, they divided into tribes which then went to war with one another over land. In several African nations, a specific Bantu tribe came to dominate the others and then set up an empire. This occurred in South Africa as well. In the 1810’s and 1820’s, the Zulus conquered many neighboring African tribes and formed the Zulu empire. This empire went on to last almost until South Africa was entirely under White rule.
So a few things worth mentioning, that by 1000 AD, the current trends in a predominately Bantu Eastern half and a predominately Khoisan Western Half was already established.

The Rise of apartheid
While the South African government did not obtain independence from Britain until 1948, the beginnings of Apartheid can be traced back to the land act of 1913. This law made it illegal for Whites to sell land to Blacks and vice versa. By this point, Whites had already conquered or purchased the vast majority of South African land and this law was designed to make sure that this would not change.
Between this time and the 1960’s, the Apartheid government passed many laws which further segregated the races. For instance, inter-racial marriage was banned.
The most often talked about policy of South Africa was the creation of the Bantustans. These were designated “homelands” for Black South Africans. The Apartheid government forcibly moved millions of Blacks from multi-racial areas of South Africa into these Bantustans.
As explained in the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the people who established the Bantustans gave the following rational for their motives:
“NP politicians portrayed the homelands as a moral response to South Africa’s ‘multi-national’ reality. Apartheid theorists believed that South Africa was a country containing a number of nations, each developed to a greater or lesser degree. Freedom, they posited, could be realized only by providing the opportunity for each of these nations to exist and develop along its own lines.”
However, critics are quick to point out that the Bantustans consisted of less than a quarter of South Africa’s land even though Blacks made up an overwhelming majority of the nation’s population.
📷
Bantustans also suffered from tremendous poverty. As the Encyclopedia of Britiannia explains:
“The Bantustans were rural, impoverished, underindustrialized, and reliant on subsidies from the South African government. The original hope of the designers of the Bantustan system was that industries would be established along the Bantustan borders to utilize the cheap labour available nearby, but for the most part these hopes went unrealized. Other initiatives to create the illusion of viable economies for the Bantustans also broke down. To the end they were heavily dependent on financial aid supplied by the South African government. Poverty remained acute in the Bantustans, and child mortality rates were extremely high. Despite draconian control of where people were allowed to farm and the number of cattle they were permitted to have, Bantustan lands were oversettled, overgrazed, and hence afflicted with serious soil erosion.”
So far so good. Of course, for this to be an article by Faulk, things would have to sharply turn downward.
The Net Economic Impact of Bantustans
Such critics rarely mention the fact that as can be seen, in 1960, Black South Africans were exactly as poor as Sub-Saharan Africans generally were. By 1980 they were far richer (1).
📷
Given this, it does not seem fair to say, as some people do, that Bantustans caused Blacks to be poor. Prior to being forced into these areas, Black South Africans were just as poor as Sub-Saharan Africans generally were. Had Black South Africans been left totally alone, there is no reason to think that they would have become any richer than the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa let alone richer than they were under Apartheid. The land in Bantustans may have been bad. But this, evidently, was more than made up for by payments from the South African government.
The economic strain caused by the nature of the Bantustans is basically uncontested by actual experts as far as I know. The basis being that the clearly linked demographic disasters linked to their design have been established but ignored by the government since their early existence through the Tomlinson report and previous studies calling for reform.
Voerwerd refusing to spend the recommended budget to actually achieve independence as oppose to partial dependence for black labour, as well as the future migration to urban areas fueled by the increasingly poor conditions, suggest whatever aid given to the homelands were far from sufficient in any meaningful sense.
Height data suggests Living standards indeed deteriorated with the onset of particular labour exploitation events and that future improvements were linked to being apartheid of the same economic benefits that white South Africans were apart of. This would've been undermined had Apartheid not inadvertently fueled migration into white urban areas and new urban areas surrounding the homelands close to white populations.
Thus, whatever growth seen between Apartheid, which eventually became economically weakened from the 1970s to the 1980s, would be in spite of the laws imposed.
See here fore an overview on the arbitrary decision, poor conditions, and deceiving nature of Homeland "independence".

In conjunction with these external pressures, domestic terrorism was rapidly rising in South Africa during this time period. Following the incident in Sharpville, members of the ANC, the leading Black political party in South Africa, formed a military wing called the MK. Among its founders was Nelson Mandela, who was famously thrown in prison in 1962 for committing various acts of terrorism against the South African government.
The most famous incident of said terrorism perpetrated by the MK was the Church Street Bombing of 1983. This attack consisted of a car bomb being set off in the middle of the day on a busy street. 19 people were killed and over 200 were wounded. 📷
This is but one example from a list of many similar terrorist attacks that occurred, mostly in the 1980’s. During this time, the MK also gained a reputation for torturing prisoners.
On top of all this, in 1989 the South African president suffered a stroke that caused him to resign from office. F.W. De Klerk took his place after being elected by congress and was then re-elected by the electoral college.
De Klerk eliminated as many of the Apartheid laws as he could and, after freeing Nelson Mandela, entered into negotiations to end Apartheid.
Following the announcement of these negotiations, De Klerk’s party, the National Party, lost a national election to the pro apartheid Conservative Party. This was taken to indicate that the (White) people of South Africa did not want Apartheid to end and so De Klerk decided to hold a national referendum on whether or not to continue his negotiations to end apartheid.
The referendum was conducted in 1992 and the public was taken to have voted to end Apartheid. However, the referendum has been heavily criticized on several grounds. First, the South African government owned the media and this meant that the public only got a biased presentation of one viewpoint (Schonteich et al., 2003). Secondly, western powers were expected to plunge South Africa into a recession if they voted no (Wren, 1993). Thirdly, serious accusations of voter fraud have been made. Regardless, the negotiations continued and in 1994 Apartheid was ended.
Some Whites tried to resist the vote by setting up smaller areas of White control, but such efforts largely subsided after several Whites were executed on live TV by Black police officers. As one author wrote:
“the sight of three wounded AWB men pleading for their lives on live television and then shot in cold blood [by black policemen] had a powerful impact on the country’s Whites.”
Following the end of Apartheid, Nelson Mandela was elected president of the new South African government.
So there's an impression left here that'll pick up on later, but to give you a hint, Faulk doesn't tell you exactly who the executed whites were.
National Success Since Apartheid
Unfortunately, since Apartheid ended South Africa has declined on many metrics of national health.
Under apartheid GDP per capita usually grew roughly in sync with the rest of the World. This trend began to collapse in the 1980’s following the introduction of sanctions against the country. After apartheid ended, GDP per capita not only stagnated but, in fact, fell such that South Africans were poorer in 2002 than they were in 1982.
📷
World Bank
Of course what it also shows is an eventual recovery.
In 1980, South Africa has an unemployment rate of 9.8% (Murwirapachena et al., 2013). By 2002, that figure had risen to 30.4%, and in 2014 it was still nearly 3 times as high as it was in 1980 (Murwirapachena et al., 2013; World Bank) .
What he doesn't show is this disparity occurring before Apartheid ended, almost 10 years prior in fact.
Under Apartheid, South Africa had a longer average life expectancy than Sub-Saharan Africa generally did. Since Apartheid ended, life expectancy has stagnated and fallen such that life expectancy was almost 10 years higher in 1992 than it was in 2002.
📷
World Bank
Like the GDP, it saw a recovery.
Murder rates in South Africa began to rise in the 1970’s. Given the national turmoil of this time period, an increase in crime is unfortunate but not surprising. Perhaps less obvious, however, is the fact that murder rates exploded following the end of apartheid. As can be seen, this has disproportionately impacted Whites.
📷
(Thompson, 2004)
That is actually not supported by the data. Coloreds in South Africa make up roughly the same percentage as whites, yet their victimizations are night and day. That's actually the point of the study.
These declines have not just impacted White South Africans. The wealth gap between Blacks and Whites in South Africa was slightly lower under Apartheid than it is today.
📷(Leibbrandt et al., 2012)
This, taken in conjunction with the fact that GDP growth has slowed since Apartheid ended, implies that both Blacks and Whites in south Africa would likely be richer today if Apartheid were still in place.
Moreover, Black South Africans reported feeling less happy and less satisfied with their lives in 2008 than they did in the early 1980’s.
📷(Moller, 1998; Gaibie and Davids, 2009)
📷(Moller, 1998; Gaibie and Davids, 2009)
Thus, it seems that the economic, physical, and psychological health of South Africa has gotten worse since Apartheid ended.
The 1980s, mind you, being Apartheid at it's economical weakest compared to previous decades, going towards the trend of less government restrictions.
Kill the Boers
Anti-White racism has also risen since Apartheid ended. Today, there is a wave of mass murder being waged against the descendants of the Boers. This is how the situation was described by the president of Genocide Watch:
“Afrikaner farm owners are being murdered at a rate four times the murder rate of other South Africans, including Black farm owners. Their families are also subjected to extremely high crime rates, including murder, rape, mutilation and torture of the victims. South African police fail to investigate or solve many of these murders, which are carried out by organized gangs, often armed with weapons that police have previously confiscated. The racial character of the killing is covered up by a SA government order prohibiting police from reporting murders by race. Instead the crisis is denied and the murders are dismissed as ordinary crime, ignoring the frequent mutilation of the victims’ bodies, a sure sign that these are hate crimes*.*However, independent researchers have compiled accurate statistics demonstrating convincingly that murders among White farm owners occur at a rate of 97 per 100,000 per year, compared to 31 per 100,000 per year in the entire South African population, making the murder rate of White SA farmers one of the highest murder rates in the world.” Leon Parkin & Gregory H. Stanton, President – Genocide Watch14 August 2012
These murders are not only common place, they are also gruesome. Attie Potgieter was stabbed over 150 times while his wife and daughter, who were later executed, were made to watch.
📷
Dr. Louis John Botha was thrown into a crocodile pit and eaten alive.
📷
As a final example, consider the Viana family. The father and daughter were shot, the mother was raped and killed, and the son was drowned to death in a bath of boiling water.
📷
These murders reflect a more general anti-White sentiment which is ubiquitous in South Africa. Even leaders of the ANC, the party now in charge of the South African government, literally sang songs about killing White people as recently as 2012.
“South Africa’s ruling party on Tuesday defended the singing of an apartheid-era song with the words “Kill the Boer” in a row that has raised fears of increasing racial polarisation.” – Govender (2010)
White South Africans are also discriminated against by various South African institutions in order to make up for the damage that Apartheid institutions are thought to have done to Blacks.
First, there is discrimination in University admissions. Consider, for instance, this report on the University of Cape Town:
“The way in which the university has achieved this diversity, however, is somewhat controversial. To be admitted, white students must score the equivalent of straight A’s. Meanwhile, black and mixed-race students can get in with plenty of B’s. The University of Cape Town doesn’t make this policy a secret — admission cutoffs are listed by race in the prospectus.” – Kelto (2011)
Employers are encourage by the state to discriminate against Whites as well. The Black Economic Empowerment law set up the following point system in the country:
“Points are based on the percentage of blacks and other non-white ethnic groups in the company’s ownership and the skills training it gives to people in these groups. For companies, having a good BEE scorecard is often essential for business. The higher the BEE score they have, the more access they get to public markets and contracts.” – Iob (2013)
Finally, in may of this year South Africa passed the “land expropriation bill” which allows the government to force White South Africans to sell their land to the government at a price that the government decides. The rational behind this law is that it can undue the redistribution of land into the hands of whites which was solidified by the Land Act of 1913.
These factors have led White South Africans to abandon South Africa in large numbers. Since Apartheid ended, over half a million White South Africans have left the country. To put that in perspective, there are less than 5 million Whites in the whole country.
Some White South Africans are unable to emigrate on their own and are asking Western nations for Refugee status. The Canadian government has recently acquiesced to this request and allowed two White South Africans to come to Canada as refugees.
“31-year-old Brandon Huntley from Cape Town said he was constantly called a “white dog” and “settler” by Black South Africans back home. He was also robbed 7 times and stabbed three times by Black South Africans since his home country ended Apartheid in 1994. “There’s a hatred of what we did to them and it’s all about the color of your skin,” Huntley told the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board. The evidence Huntley provided showed “a picture of indifference and inability or unwillingness of the South African government to protect White South Africans from persecution by African South Africans,” Board Chairman William Davis said.” –
White South Africans are also asking for refugee status from the EU which, in recent years, has allowed tens of thousands of middle eastern and African refugees to cross its borders.
I won't sugarcoat the the economic and social issues of whites currently in South Africa. The problem is, aside from the victimization of Afrikaners (farmers specifically) by murders, the general economic position of whites in South Africa hasn't changed.
As for white emigration, his figure combines the total number of whites (roughly 300k) that have left between 1986 (that is before apartheid fell) and 2000, and roughly 300k between 2000-2015.
Overall, the white population only slightly shrank between 1980 and 2015.

If conquest is not a legitimate means to acquire land, the Zulu and similar Bantu tributes did not justly own South African land, nor did any other tribe of the last few hundred years. After all, this land was conquered from Khoisan and older Bantu tribes.
Moreover, if the Zulu did steal the land, it is not clear that Apartheid was in the wrong for taking it from them. Is it wrong to steal something which is stolen from the thief who stole it?
If, on the other hand, conquest is a valid way to acquire land, then White South Africans had a perfectly legitimate claim on it. This might be taken to imply that there is also nothing wrong with modern Black South Africans taking land from Whites. However, conquering land via war is not the same thing as using a false political narrative about the supposed negative effects of apartheid to take land. Moreover, forcing White people into a society that hates and mass murders them is not analogous to putting Blacks in bantustans which, as we have seen, were not as bad as they are often made out to be.
I consider the morality of conquest to be a difficult question and I won’t try to resolve it here. What I will say is that it is very hard to come up with any principled moral answer which would justify the totality of what is being done to White South Africans.
Where to begin?
  1. Assuming the validity of the right of conquest, that only applies to the right to claim land or wield power over it. That doesn't exempt moral considerations on particular acts directed towards the previous occupiers. That is, if the Zulu Empire lead to the displacement and abuse of other groups like the Khoisan, then they can be morally judged on those grounds. Same can be easily said for victims of the Anglo-Boer wars under concentration camps.
  2. "White South Africans" didn't conquer Bantu lands leading to their annexation, it was the British specifically. Boers more so are responsible for the displacement of the Khoisan in the Western Cape.
  3. "Forced Removals" weren't the direct result of being conquered, annexation was. Forced removals, then, can be viewed as a separate act apart of conquest from war and as a decision by an already formed government. It was these laws that form the basis of land claims, not British colonization in and of itself.
  4. There is noting "false" that was validly demonstrated regarding the effect of Bantustans had on the black population. Nor were the Bantustans "not that bad", as most moved out by 1986.
Political Violence
Another important question is whether or not the political violence initiated by the MK against White South Africans was justified.
Apartheid set up various laws, some of which I would consider unjust. Most importantly, Apartheid severely restricted the right of Blacks to protest. This was the justification that Mandela used for resorting to violence. He had no other choice.
This may be true, and if you think that apartheid’s policies were sufficiently horrible this may justify violence, but there is no way that the indiscriminate violence against innocent and random White south Africans that the MK engaged in can be justified. Their activities, especially in the 1980’s, were morally equivalent to any other act of mass murder.
Further more, as we have seen, Apartheid’s actions were not nearly as bad as they are often thought to have been.
This is what I was alluding to earlier, that terrorism among the Anti-Apartheid movement was directed towards whites mostly. While there were indeed anti-white motivation fueling the movement, the overwhelming majority were black. See here for an understanding.
This whole section is a strawman.
Evaluating Apartheid
Even if Apartheid improved the material and psychological conditions of Black Africans,
It didn't. De facto economic integration efforts was what lead to observed improvements.
On the other hand, the material benefit that Whites brought to South Africa, and Africa generally, was truly immense. Were it not for colonialism, most Africans alive today would have never even been born.
In South Africa, that population growth came from a reaction of concentrated poverty, not wealth.
Fundamentally, the problem of African colonialism is the problem of multi-racialism. So long as Whites allowed Blacks to continue to live in Africa, which could have only been prevented with a massive and horrific genocide, Black Africans were going to resent them.
Except in Botswana, and to a lesser extent Namibia. Both with significantly different approaches to race relations.
As Apartheid shows us, this is true even if the Whites improve the conditions of the Blacks. There will always been a feeling that Whites do not belong there and Blacks will always resent the invariably superior material conditions of Whites.
Probably because many were removed from and forced away from Urban living.
Colonialism of the United States only worked because there aren’t many Indians around anymore.
I get the feeling this is part of his Bitchute video on the topic.
The kind of colonialism practiced in Africa in which Whites would be permanent but ruling minorities in a majority Black nation was never sustainable without an uncomfortable measure of totalitarianism and even then ethnic conflict was still common place.
Again Botswana.
The violence surrounding colonialism was rarely, if ever, one sided. Today, there is a massive level of systemic racism against White South Africans. The fact that this racism is not covered in Western media offers a stark contrast with how the media covered the sins of Apartheid.
The sources of the farm murders and affirmative actions were News24, a relatively left leaning SA news source, NPR, Reuters, Voice of America and the Dailymail. Only one source was an "alternative one", which reported the murder a whole year after News24 did and relied on a mainstream Afrikaner-news report.
These get attention by "Western media".
Overall, the problems of South Africa, both in terms of Blacks resenting their White rulers under Apartheid and Whites experiencing racism today, come from the inherent difficulties of having a multi-racial society. In this sense, the story of South Africa contains lessons not only about colonialism but also about more general and pressing questions of immigration and diversity.
Or, you know, what happens when you don't consider the role of Black Africans in your government, unlike Botswana.

2020.09.19 20:55 StevenStevens43 Humber the Hun

Humber the Hun
Humber the Hun:
Humber the Hun was supposed to have been part of the invasions of Albion, beginning in 1112 BC.
Humber the Hun
Humber the Hun (Gaelic: Emer or Éber mac Ír, or Éber Don mac Ír Ulaid) son of Ír and grandson of Miled, was a legendary king of so-called "Huns" who, according to Gafridian legend, invaded the British Isles in about the 12th century BC. His people successfully conquered Scotia but he himself was drowned during his campaign against Southern Britain. His sons became the Kings of Ulster and ultimately Dál Riata, the earliest Kingdom of Scotland. At some point, he began to equated with his namesake Donn, the Gaelic God of the Dead.
Latin:
Now, nobody knows who the Huns are.
Particularly modern Latin speakers.
In the Latin language, Scotti means Gaels.
Scotti
Scoti or Scotti is a Latin name for the Gaels,[1]

Hun:
However, even today, the Gaelic word for Scot, is Hun.
This means that Gaelic speakers might have a slightly better grasp on who the Huns might have been, than the modern Romanised Latin speaker.
It also means that when modern day Scots during football matches with the Auld enemy sing "Go home ya Hun", they are actually "wrong".
The Huns were the Scoloti.
Luckily the Scots don't face too much shame regarding this fact, as the other half of the Auld enemy are also unaware of the fact that they are infact "not" the Huns.
Pop culture
Modern Ulster Scots and other Scots Protestants are still referred to as Huns by Gaels.[10

Hungary:
Now obviously, the word "Hun" is pretty much synonymous with the country named Hungary, suggesting that Huns may have certain origins in this area.
After-all, Humber the Hun is said to have arrived in the Humber from Germany.
Of course, there was no such place as Germany in 1112 BC.
It was Gaul, and Gaul was a name that pertained to the entire area of mainland inhabited by Gaelic speaking Gauls, which at this point in history, would have included Hungary.
Mediaeval history
When Locrinus raided Humber's ships after his death, he found Humber's consort Estrildis,[2][3] the daughter of the King of Germany there.

Hungarians:
The modern day word for "Hun", as in Hungary, derived from the Huns from Eurasia, not the Huns from Humber.
Well, not immediately anyway.
Etymology
The "H" in the name of Hungary (and Latin Hungaria) is most likely due to founded historical associations with the Huns, who had settled Hungary prior to the Avars.

Scythian sphere:
However, the land of Hungary pre-dated the country of Hungary, and back in the Iron age, Hungary did not exist, and was infact part of the Scythian sphere.
History of Hungary
Hungary in its modern (post-1946) borders roughly corresponds to the Great Hungarian Plain (the Pannonian basin). During the Iron Age, it was at the boundary of Celtic, Illyrian and Iranian (Scythian) cultural spheres.

Royal Scoloti:
Now, Scythia was a "big" region.
It also took in an Iranian area known as Sogdiana.
The aristocrats were known as the Royal Scoloti.
Scythians
.[10][13] Based in what is modern-day Ukraine and southern Russia, the Scythians called themselves Scoloti and were led by a nomadic warrior aristocracy known as the Royal Scythians.

Sogdiana:
Now Sogdiana, whilst being part of Scythia, in turn, ruled an empire which stretched to the border of China.
Sogdia
Sogdia (/ˈsɒɡdiə/) (Sogdian: soɣd) or Sogdiana was an ancient Iranian civilization that at different times included territory located in present-day Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, such as Samarkand, Bukhara, Khujand, Panjikent, and Shahrisabz. Sogdiana was also a province of the Achaemenid Empire,

Sogdiana princesses:
During the annexation of the empire by Alexander the Great, Alexander had Sogdiana princesses sent to breed with his Greek friends.
Biography
Antiochus I was half Sogdian,[2][3] his mother Apama, daughter of Spitamenes, being one of the eastern princesses whom Alexander the Great had given as wives to his generals in 324 BC.[4]

Auld Edina:
It is likely that Scotlands current day capital city of Edinburgh (Auld Edina), from the root word Dun Eideann, is derived from the Royal Scoloti sogdiana.

Xiongnu:
Now, this is where the Xiongnu come in to this.
The Xiongnu were a "Nomadic" tribe, and one might know to suspect, that when you see the word "Nomadic" it is likely referring to a certain Aryan peoples that got Nomadism in to their DNA after requiring to leave their homelands during the younger dryas.
Xiongnu
The Xiongnu (Chinese: 匈奴; Wade–Giles: Hsiung-nu, [ɕjʊ́ŋ.nǔ]) were a tribal confederation[3] of nomadic peoples who, according to ancient Chinese sources, inhabited the eastern Eurasian Steppe from the 3rd century BC to the late 1st century AD. Chinese sources report that Modu Chanyu, the supreme leader after 209 BC, founded the Xiongnu Empire.[4]

Huaxia people:
Now Chinese history draws a distinction between the more civilised Huaxia people (Indigenous Mongolians) and the more barbaric Nomadic Xiongnu.
Early history
.[19] It also draws a distinct line between the settled Huaxia people (Chinese) to the pastoral nomads (Xiongnu), characterizing it as two polar groups in the sense of a civilization versus an uncivilized society
Hua-Yi distinction:
It is called the Hua-Yi distinction.
Hua-Yi distinction
The distinction between Huá and (Chinese: ; pinyin: Huá Yí zhī biàn), also known as Sino–barbarian dichotomy,[1] is an ancient Chinese concept that differentiated a culturally defined "China" (called Huá, Huaxia 華夏; Huáxià, or Xià ) from cultural or ethnic outsiders (, conventionally "barbarians"). Although Yí is often translated as "barbarian", other translations of this term in English include "foreigners",[2]
Modu Chanyu:
Now, the Xiongnu under Mody Chanyu, almost overthrew the Chinese emperor.
State formation
After forging internal unity, Modu Chanyu expanded the empire on all sides. To the north he conquered a number of nomadic peoples, including the Dingling of southern Siberia. He crushed the power of the Donghu people of eastern Mongolia and Manchuria as well as the Yuezhi in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu, where his son, Jizhu, made a skull cup out of the Yuezhi king. Modu also reoccupied all the lands previously taken by the Qin general Meng Tian.
Under Modu's leadership, the Xiongnu threatened the Han dynasty, almost causing Emperor Gaozu, the first Han emperor, to lose his throne in 200 BC.[31]

Chinese princesses and Great wall of China:
The Chinese decided to build a great wall, as a border to define the territory between Xiongnu and China, and to attempt to appease the Xiongnu, they began sending them Chinese princesses, along with other gifts including money and alcohol.
Marraige diplomacy
The Han sent princesses to marry Xiongnu leaders in their efforts to stop the border raids. Along with arranged marriages, the Han sent gifts to bribe the Xiongnu to stop attacking.[31] After the defeat at Pingcheng in 200 BC, the Han emperor abandoned a military solution to the Xiongnu threat. Instead, in 198 BC , the courtier Liu Jing&action=edit&redlink=1) [zh)] was dispatched for negotiations. The peace settlement eventually reached between the parties included a Han princess given in marriage to the chanyu (called heqin) (Chinese: 和親; lit.: 'harmonious kinship'); periodic gifts to the Xiongnu of silk, distilled beverages and rice; equal status between the states; and the Great Wall as mutual border.
Cant beat them, join them:
However, the raids did not stop, and the Hans Chinese decided to attempt to forge an alliance with them.
Marraige diplomacy
The Xiongnu also practiced marriage alliances with Han dynasty officers and officials who defected to their side. The older sister of the Chanyu (the Xiongnu ruler) was married to the Xiongnu General Zhao Xin, the Marquis of Xi who was serving the Han dynasty. The daughter of the Chanyu was married to the Han Chinese General Li Ling after he surrendered and defected.[39][40][41][42] Another Han Chinese General who defected to the Xiongnu was Li Guangli, general in the War of the Heavenly Horses, who also married a daughter of the Chanyu.[43]
Envoy:
Behind the backs of the Xiongnu, the Hans Chinese sent an envoy to go and explore the Western world and try and find an ally to help fight the Xiongnu, however the information received back from the envoy, put China into a state of emergency, and expelling the Xiongnu became a matter of urgency.
It is not know exactly what the message was, but i assume it was along the lines of "those people are everywhere".
Han xiongnu war
The Han dynasty made preparations for war when the Han Emperor Wu dispatched the explorer Zhang Qian to explore the mysterious kingdoms to the west and to form an alliance with the Yuezhi people in order to combat the Xiongnu. During this time Zhang married a Xiongnu wife, who bore him a son, and gained the trust of the Xiongnu leader.[45][46][47][48][49][50][51] While Zhang Qian did not succeed in this mission,[52] his reports of the west provided even greater incentive to counter the Xiongnu hold on westward routes out of China,

Southern Xiongnu & Northern xiongnu:
The result of the war, was that the Chinese would be successful in putting a barrier between themselves and the Xiongnu, by placing a southern Xiongnu between themselves and a Northern Xiongnu.
Southern Xiongnu and Northern Xiongnu
In 48 AD, a confederation of eight Xiongnu tribes in Bi's power base in the south, with a military force totalling 40,000 to 50,000 men, seceded from Punu's kingdom and acclaimed Bi as chanyu. This kingdom became known as the Southern Xiongnu.
600 year empire destroyed:
In the year 439 AD, 600 years of Xiongnu living in this area came to an end, and finally China rid themselves of the last remnants of Xiongnu.
Juqu and)
By 439, the Juqu power was destroyed by the Northern Wei. Their remnants were then settled in the city of Gaochang before being destroyed by the Rouran.
Tribute:
Now, the Xiongnu done to the Chinese, exactly what the Huns would do to the Romans.
Significance
The Xiongnu confederation was unusually long-lived for a steppe empire. The purpose of raiding China was not simply for goods, but to force the Chinese to pay regular tribute.
Contemporary understanding:
Now, believe it or not, the Xiongnu being the same group as the Huns, is actually now the contemporary view amongst historians and scholars.
However contemporary, is not the same thing as general consensus.
Huns
.[70] Although the theory that the Xiongnu were precursors of the Huns known later in Europe is now accepted by many scholars, it has yet to become a consensus view.

Hunnic invasion
Turkic descendency:
Now, Turks claim that the Xiongnu were Turkish, because they are descended from Xiongnu.
However ascended, and descended, are two different things.
I am sure it is possible, that by the time the Sogdians came out of Mongolia, they were now quite Turkic.
Turkic
Uyghur Khagans claimed descent from the Xiongnu (according to Chinese history Weishu, the founder of the Uyghur Khaganate was descended from a Xiongnu ruler).[86]
Both the 7th-century Chinese History of the Northern Dynasties[87] and the Book of Zhou,[88] an inscription in the Sogdian language, report the Göktürks to be a subgroup of the Xiongnu.[89][90]
Iranian ancestors:
However, scholars tend to agree that when the Xiongnu first arrived in Mongolia, they were Northern Iranian speakers.
Iranian
Harold Walter Bailey proposed an Iranian origin of the Xiongnu, recognizing all the earliest Xiongnu names of the 2nd century BC as being of the Iranian type.[9] This theory is supported by turkologist Henryk Jankowski).[10] Central Asian scholar Christopher I. Beckwith notes that the Xiongnu name could be a cognate of Scythian, Saka and Sogdia, corresponding to a name for Northern Iranians.[27][
Chinese Hun:
Now, the word the Chinese used to refer to the Xiongnu as, translates pretty much in to English as "Hun".
Some may mistake this as the word "Hun" having Chinese origins.
However, it is more likely that the Chinese referred to them by a word similar to Hun, because, that is what the Xiongnu of the time likely referred to themselves as.

2020.09.19 16:10 s810 Old Austin Tales: North Austin Meetups of Prehistoric Eras - (4000BC - 1690AD)

The folks down at the Austin History Center are slowly scanning archival photos and adding to UNT's Portal to Texas History even in these pandemic times. Among others, there are quite a few new photos of land parade floats from the early Austin Aqua Festivals in 1962 and 63. It's disappointing to see photos like this 1963 Austin Aqua Festival parade float ignorantly depicting Native Americans in a less than flattering light.
But a few of those kids dressed as stereotypical and generic 1960s natives probably had elderly relatives who remembered the time before all the tribes were ejected from this area and probably would have still thought of them as little more than savages. The photo gives context to the times in which it was taken. The Austinites of that era seem to have had less respect for those people who lived here hundreds or thousands of years before the Spanish and French started roaming around here.
As a modern Austinite I don't see why this attitude should be held up. Those were humans who lived here, if even sporadically, and loved the land and the creeks and trees as much or more than you or I. They just called the landmarks different names back then. It is known that some of the tribes who used to live around here were warlike and confrontational with other tribes. My own grandmother was born in Austin in the 1930s and often told me a tall tale about a fictional battle between the Comanche and 1000 Apache warriors in the hills near Lake Travis. (sometimes the battle took place in the area around where we were sitting in traffic depending on grandma's mood) It was a Thermopylae/Alamo-like tale of outnumbered Comanche braves winning the day by running to the hill now known as Commanche Peak and waiting in ambush. But grandma often told some whoppers and that was surely one of them. I've never read about even the scantest evidence that something like that took place here, if even only in oral histories of the tribes involved. But who knows. My point is we really don't know a whole lot about what the people who lived here before everything, and what they did while they were here.
Today I wanted to share some small bit of the real story of these people who lived here when real estate was free if you could keep it from the wild beasts or competing tribes. Because the real story, from what little we know of it, is really just as captivating as Grandma's tall tales were.
On a related note I recently discovered the AustinFound podcast from Michael Barnes and a few other folks at The Statesman. They've been writing the good historyposts on The Statesman's Austin360.com for a while now under the same name and I've referenced them a lot here before. Michael Barnes knows his stuff. He has written a multi-volume book set called Indelible Austin and was one of the people who went on the expedition to look for traces of the 1730 Spanish mission set up somewhere in this area. In episodes 1, 6, and 27 of the podcast he talks about the three main native tribes in this area: The Apache, who considered this area the northeastern border of their roaming grounds and had mostly vacated by the 1800s, the Comanche, who were descended from the Apache (edit: fixed) Wyoming Shoshone tribe long ago in modern Utah and Wyoming and considered this area the southeastern border of their expanding roaming grounds, and the Tonkawa tribe, who were also war like but had a different culture and their own ways. They especially were early victims of the diseases brought by european contact.
One thing I agree with Michael Barnes about is how The Tonkawa, despite having more of a territorial claim to the area Austin is in now than the other two tribes, are under-represented in the old chronicles written down by early white settlers. The Comanche are namedropped in the written accounts of the 1800s quite a bit for their 'depredations' on early settlers. It was the Comanche were the only tribe in this region who, for a time, rebuffed all attempts to subjugate them from Spain, Mexico, and Anglos. But the Tonkawa, on the other hand, being so few in number had to ally themselves with whites against the other two tribes. Because of this they were westernized quickly and assumed a sort of sub-caste in frontier society. Early accounts refer to them as 'Tonks' and talk in exaggerated ways about their cannibalism and wolf-worship. From what I understand the people eating only took place after winning a great battle. The tribe has a website nowadays where you can learn about their culture, their colorful traditional clothing and how it was made, and the Trail of Tears out of Central Texas.
It's not often talked about what tribes were here before the Tonkawa and the Comanche and Apache. It's a topic I'm always looking to learn more about. If you've lived here a while you might have heard of the Leanderthal Lady. Her remains are estimated to be between 10000 and 13000 years old and according to this article was found with buried with a shark tooth. I've also talked about the digs at the Westcave Preserve near Hamilton Pool, and the Levi and Smith Rock Shelters, where evidence of human habitation dates back 10000 years at least. But that brings up the question: Who lived in the area in between then and the time of the Tonkawa? I know there are stories from early settlers about an 'Indian Village' of an unnamed tribe very near the old Santa Monica Springs on the Colorado River but that's about it. Well thanks to some archeological digs over the years when new stuff had been built we know about a few frequent party spots some of the people alive back then liked to congregate in. I've found archeological reports from three separate digs in spots around North Austin, which is fine because the good rock shelters appear to have been in what is now South Austin anyway...
Let's start in the order the reports were made. The first concerns a site where people camped repeatedly over the course of the last 4000 years that today lies in a neighborhood near the intersection of North Lamar and Braker Lane. Back in the neighborhood is a street called Jetta Court. This neighborhood dates back to the mid to late 1960s and when built the area was already known for arrowhead deposits. In the 1980s further digs established the whole area around where Walnut Creek Park is today was once a major habitation area. But back in '68 the home builder company was partially done with the neighborhood and paid for a salvage dig after reports of trespassers "pothunting".
The report from the salvage dig was published in the Bulletin of the Texas Archeological Society, Volume 47, 1976 and is available in the UNT archive. You can read the whole thing if you feel like getting into the weeds. Quoting the abstract and introduction:
During the course of several weekends in 1968 and 1969, students from The University of Texas at Austin carried out test excavations at the Jetta Court site in Travis County, central Texas. These investigations constituted a salvage effort designed to obtain information on this site before it was destroyed by construction activities in a housing development. The terrace deposits at Jetta Court yielded a long Archaic sequence, including a deeply buried occupation which occurred stratigraphically below Early Archaic materials. The results of the excavations are described, and detailed analyses of the lithic debris and faunal re mains are presented.
The Jetta Court site (41 TV 151) is located within the city limits of Austin, Texas, buried in terrace deposits on the west side of Walnut Creek (Figs. 1-3). The site was brought to the attention of the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory (TARL) of The University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 1968 by reports of pothunting in an area slated for a housing subdivision. Inspection of the site by TARL personnel indicated that it should be tested before the planned construction activities were begun.
Excavations, directed by graduate students in anthropology at The University of Texas at Austin, were carried out with volunteer help. Work was done on weekends during a period from December, 1968, to February, 1969. Since the site was unprotected during the week, numerous instances of vandalism occurred. One unit of excavation was eventually ruined, but the others were not seriously damaged. This combination of weekend excavation and weekday vandalism limited effective investigation to stratigraphic testing and backhoe trenching. Exposures of horizontal tracts were not done partly be- cause of fear that it would lead to more extensive depredations on the part of the pothunters, and partly because the site was considerably deeper than was anticipated.
The writers would like to acknowledge the assistance and under- standing of Mr. Cecil Lamour, representing Conann Construction, Inc., in permitting the excavations. His patience with our backhoe operations, in particular, was most helpful.
How dramatic. Apparently someone thought there was buried treasure nearby. I wonder what could have given them that idea.. Here's a photo of the site at the time and Here's a map of the dig site with the holes marked. All of this area is built over today.
The dig was done hastily and the vandalism limited the findings. The report goes on describe two burned rock midden sites located within the boundaries of the dig. These were like old campfires that had been repeatedly built over for a number of years during two different eras.
Some further highlights from the report:
Here's a photo of the one of the holes.
There are a couple of photos of some of the lithic projectile points found in the upper, newer rock midden. Here's one. Here's another. And a couple from the lower, older midden. Here's one from the lower and here's another. There are many more photos and charts showing the finds, their classifications, and their locations in relation to one another in the layered deposits. This is how most of the rest of the report goes.
There were many animal bones and shells found in some areas indicating people ate there, or used the site for industry. Here a list of animal species found in the bones they can identify. On the menu: snails, turtles, opossum, coyote, deer, bison, cow, a couple of kinds of rabbits and mice, and strangely gophers. Apparently there used to be gophers around here when the climate favored grasslands over forests.
The distribution of animal bones is nicely charted here in size and age, Category A being the largest animals like bison and Category C being the smallest, such as rats and snails. The report notes that remains of small animals would degrade faster so that might skew the results.
To sum it all up because it's way too long to copypaste, the two burned rock middens at Jetta Court don't contribute a whole lot of new information to the story besides offering evidence that the spot was a place for habitation. I think if I understand it correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) the lower midden dates back over 3000 years while the upper midden dates back about 2000 years. The report talks about not knowing how to classify the artifacts within the archaic period. It recommends further digs in the area but acknowledges that's probably not possible with the neighborhood going up. What the writers didn't know is that just a few years later digs would begin at many different sites in what is now Walnut Creek Park that further expanded the knowledge of that area and its earliest inhabitants.
Moving on to the next site, which lies a little bit east of there at what became the Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farm, once an actual farm near Sprinkle now turned into a live action museum exhibit by the city which is beloved by schoolkids on field trips. It turns out that when the farm was built in the 1850s, part of the property contained a much older camp site that was favored by natives a thousand years ago. A report was written in 1994 about a dig in 1983. (PDF warning). The site of the native cultural deposits was at the southern end of the farm. Here is a map of the site in relation to the farm.
The PDF isn't as copypaste friendly as the other UNT article but it's short and I can summarize the findings. It's really more of just an abstract compared to the other long report. It's worth taking the time to read if you can handle PDFs and you're interested in the history of the area at all. In the introduction they describe how the farm was bought by the Heritage Society of Austin in the 1950s and belonged to the City of Austin by 1980 as part of the same deal that established Walnut Creek Park. More than a few digs had been done in the area around there in the early 1980s. It describes 22 different ancient burials found at one nearby site. At the farm site itself there was a deposit of projectile points over a meter thick of most types found in the area during the archaic era.
That brings us to the third site. called Millican Bench. Never heard of it? Me neither. It's a tiny spot just south of The Arboretum today that was obliterated by the construction of Loop 360 in the 1970s. Before the highway cut through the site, TxDot conducted a dig in 1970 and 71 on a small limestone plateau (thus the bench) where artifacts had been reported by the previous landowner. The report on the site dig is another PDF, but it was written in 2003, is very detailed, and will let me copypaste from it. Here's a map of the site showing where it was in the roadbed of modern Loop 360.
Quoting from the introduction:
Located in Travis County, the Millican Bench site(41TV163) was the first archeological site excavated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT; then Texas Highway Department) as a mitigation effort for highway construction under the requirements of the National Environmental Protection Act of 1966. The excavation was conducted between September of 1970 and February of 1971under the direction of Frank Weir, then of the Texas Highway Department. In August of 2002, TxDOT contracted with the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (Work Authorization#57014PD004) to conduct an inventory and assessment of the archeological collections and documentation associated with site 41TV163, develop possible research questions that could be pursued with the site data, and to prepare the project material for permanent curation. Based on that assessment(Mahoney et al. 2003a), and following consultation with TxDOT, CAR further was directed to produce a final report. This document constitutes the final report on the TxDOT work at 41TV163. Included in this report are a description of the site, excavation procedures, and an analysis of selected components of the data collected over three decades ago.
To report on excavations and analyze data collected over30 years ago presents several challenges. Foremost among these is that if one wishes to avoid a primarily historical perspective, data collected using earlier field methods to investigate earlier theoretical concerns must be molded to address current questions. In this case, the disconnect between the theoretical and methodological considerations that guided the excavation of 41TV163, which appear to have been focused on chronology and cultural history, and current research interests in Texas archeology is exacerbated by the loss of a large portion of the field notes, some photo logs, and some of the artifacts and samples during the intervening years. Nevertheless, in the assessment document (Mahoney et al. 2003a), we identified a series of current research issues that could be addressed using data generated by the work at 41TV163. These include investigating temporal changes in subsistence patterns and changes in lithic technology. In addition, we investigate several aspects of site use during the Late Prehistoric occupation of 41TV163.
So what this is saying is that basically the original field work and notes were lost and they had to reconstruct everything. I guess they thought it was worth it in scientific value to reconstruct or else maybe because it was the forerunner to TxDot's first dig. In any case the findings showed evidence of habitation a bit later than the other sites to the east. The intro continues:
Initially, seven discrete areas, designated A through G, were identified at Millican Bench. Figure 1-2 (the map linked earlier) presents a section of an aerial photo with the sketched locations of these seven areas, along with the Loop 360 center line. The photo appears to have been created at the time of the fieldwork. Area A consisted of a burned rock midden located on a topographic bench. Another probable burned rock midden, Area B, was situated on the slope and creek terrace below the bench.Located just to the west of Area B were two other areas, designated C and D. These appeared to be occupation areas with burned rock and other debris present. Three additional areas, designated E, F, and G, were located across the creek east of Areas A–D. Area E was a burned rock midden that measured approximately four meters in diameter. Area F contained a concentration of occupation refuse with burned rock and chipped stone, while Area G was a broad bedrock exposure containing scattered chipped stone debris. With the exception of Area G, where only surface collection was conducted, all areas (A through F) had some level of excavation. At 41TV163, TxDOT personnel recorded 11features, including a human burial (Feature 10) and a possible structure (Feature 3). In addition, more than 200cores, 1,400 tools, 400 projectile points, and 42,500 pieces of debitage were collected. With the exception of any evidence for Paleo-indian occupation, the 41TV163 materials seem to reflect most prehistoric periods. Collected projectile point types thought to be diagnostic include Wells, Early Split Stem, Early Triangular, Martindale, and Uvalde forms dating to much of the Early Archaic (8000–6000 BP); Nolan,Travis, and a single Andice point, all dating to the Middle Archaic (6000–4000 BP); Bulverde, Pedernales, Williams,Lange, Marshall, Montell, Castroville, Ensor, Frio, Fairland, and Darl forms dating throughout the Late Archaic (4000–1250 BP); and Scallorn points, dating to the early portion of the Late Prehistoric (1250–700 BP). A small amount of historic and/or modern material was also collected, though it is not considered in any detail in this report.
Long story short, this area was frequently visited from about 4000BC-1300AD, mostly toward the latter date, and shows different patterns in habitation indicating the different tribal customs in use at that point. In addition to rock middens and lots of projectile points and rock flakes, an ancient human burial was found. Also many animal bones like the other sites indicating different eating areas.
Well there you have a few stories of the people who lived here before recorded history. I hope one day more local history writers and bloggers can address this topic in more depth than I have time for here today. I know there are a lot of people out there like me who would love to know more. Time is way short so I've got to wrap this up quick. I obviously don't have any related photos from prehistory but have some newly added old Aqua Fest photos from the UNT archive for Bonus Pics today.

2020.09.19 15:05 LordChozo Peripheral Visions - "An Island in the Darkness" and the End of an Era

from Strictly Inc., 1995
Listen to it here!
This is my sixth (and potentially final) post in the Peripheral Visions series, which I conceptualized as a means to talk about songs that were members of a sort of “Genesis-but-not-Genesis” set of pieces. The loose rule I set for myself going in was that songs needed to be collaborative efforts between two or more members/ex-members of Genesis, and that of course they needed to hold my interest enough for me to put in the effort to write about them at length. In this series to date I’ve covered bits from the solo careers of Mike, Steve, Ant, and Pete, as well as a meta-post about how well the various members of the band interacted with one another as songwriters, noting there that Phil was involved with every previous song in the Peripheral Visions catalog, as it were.
But there’s someone who’s been conspicuously absent from this series outside of that meta-discussion. It’s someone who, with the exception of “From the Undertow” from A Curious Feeling, preferred not to rely on any of the full members of Genesis with his solo output. But given that I already discussed that song a bit both on the “A Call To Arms” PV post as well as the post for “Undertow” in my Hindsight series, it didn’t make much sense to me to retread that same ground here.
So instead I’d like to break convention a little bit and talk not about the Tony song that most represents the spirit of Genesis in its collaborative songwriting, but the one that most represents the spirit of Genesis in its utter brilliance and ambition. Let me preface this by saying that, while generally familiar, I am by no means an expert on the solo career of Tony Banks. At the time of this writing there are quite a number of songs of his that I’ve never heard, and many of the ones that I have listened to I haven’t come anywhere close to fully digesting. So I am ill qualified to make any kind of comprehensive, sweeping statements about his solo catalog. OK? We’ve all accepted that disclaimer and we’re willing to continue? Still with me? OK, good.
“An Island in the Darkness” is the best song Tony Banks ever created outside of Genesis, and it’s not even particularly close. I daresay it might be the best solo song any of the Genesis members have ever produced, and I’ve probably only heard 10% of their collective solo output (thanks, Ant). It’s the perfect capstone to an underexposed solo career, a perfect representation of Tony as a songwriter, and dang near a perfect song, period.
Tony: I was writing my solo material in parallel with Genesis and the style changes a little bit over [time], in the same way the Genesis stuff does. I did the solo albums because I had much more material than could ever come out in Genesis, and wanted to have an outlet for them. I'm primarily a writer, though I love recording music as well. So, the albums give me great satisfaction. I was very pleased with them at the time I did them and I'm still pleased with them. I'm not one of those people who tends to rubbish their old material. I think they're still valid and still could be appreciated by the Genesis audience—particularly the older Genesis audience. So, that’s a reason for putting them out this way. I don't know that I've changed that much over time. I always tend to ramble a bit. That's part of my musical style, which was also my approach within Genesis. Perhaps I did slightly more concise music when it came to the later solo period—a bit like it was with Genesis. But I still had the big, long rambling moments with “An Island in the Darkness,” which is probably the strongest moment on Strictly Inc. 1
Let’s take a very brisk walk through Tony’s solo career to see how we got to this point, shall we? First things first: Tony’s no singer.
Tony: Although I have sung on previous solo albums, I don’t regard myself as a singer. I’m not really comfortable in the role of frontman and all that involves. 2
So for his debut album, 1979’s A Curious Feeling, he finds Kim Beacon, former singer of the band String Driven Thing, who were labelmates of Genesis on Charisma and toured Europe with them - albeit before Beacon himself had joined the band. 1983 saw both a soundtrack for The Wicked Lady as well as Tony trying to score hits by becoming his own singer on The Fugitive, with predictably poor results. 1986 saw an underwhelming Soundtracks album with a few different voices scattered in, and then Tony sought to replicate Mike’s success with the Mechanics by forming his own band, releasing a “self-titled” album, 1989’s Bankstatement, with a pair of singers who weren’t always well-suited to the songs. Frustrated, he grabbed a bunch of different vocalists for a “true” solo album with Still in 1991. When that failed as well, he decided to go back to the band concept once again, looking for anyone who might fit to be a singer. One, more than one, didn’t matter. Gotta get that Mechanics money, ya know?
Tony: I’ve worked with Fish, Toyah, Nik Kershaw, and Jack Hues from...what the f---’s the name of the group? I’m getting old. Wang Chung! I’ve always looked for singers I liked, like Peter. 3
Ah yes, that one guy from Whatshisface, perfect. This is boding quite well.
Tony: With this album, I knew I needed a singer who could get into my corner and do a better job than I ever could. Jack was perfect in that his vocal style was similar to mine, only far superior. He was ideally suited to these songs. Jack’s voice has a slightly hysterical quality that I like. It’s unpredictable and a little eccentric, which fits these songs perfectly. 2
I joke about it, but Tony’s right on the money here: Jack actually sounds fantastic on this album, all the way through. Tony probably thought he’d found one of two or three singers he’d need, but then ran through the whole set of material with Hues, just to see.
Tony: Jack has an intriguing voice with the edge that’s needed on the vocals I write. When we started work, the obviously suitable songs sounded fantastic, but then we went on to the ones that I thought might work less well, and they sounded really good too. It was very exciting. 4
Now this is working. Now there’s some chemistry here. Jack’s allowed “in,” so to speak, more than anyone else has really been to this point.
Tony: It was the first time I’ve worked all the way through an album with a singer who was involved in more than just the singing. Kim Beacon sang on A Curious Feeling, but didn’t write lyrics. Jack Hues was involved in a couple of lyrics. He was also around quite a bit when I was making the album. He played guitar on some of the pieces, but didn’t want to do some of the lead guitar work. He was happy to do little bits and pieces and that worked well. So, Strictly Inc. was more of a unit with Jack and Nick Davis, who produced it. 1
And in a fascinating bit of foreshadowing…
Tony: All the music is by me, and Jack wrote the lyrics on a couple of songs. That’s the stage that Jack came in. If we were to do it again, Jack would be more involved. 5
Hmmmmm…
Regardless of whether he’d be able to retain the lessons learned a mere two years later, Tony was all-in on this band thing again.
Tony: [Jack] and I have given ourselves the name Strictly Inc as a duo, so this is not a Tony Banks solo album. 4
Well.
Strictly Inc. is pretty much a pop/prog-pop/soft rock album through and through. It’s an inoffensive listen with tracks that grow on you. There are even a couple tunes you could envision being radio hits if the radio ever played songs like these and also if people’s tastes during the mid-90s were entirely different from what they were. Poor Tony had to resort to direct and desperate pleas in interviews to try to get this thing any play at all.
Tony: I just want people to give Strictly Inc. a chance. Some people think that it’s just the voice they like about Genesis, but much of it is down to the chord progressions and those sorts of things. I suppose that that’s me - I’ve always been one of the major writers of the group, and if you like our songs it’s worth giving Strictly Inc. a listen. 4
To put it succinctly, Strictly Inc. was a clout-chasing, radio-begging, hit-starving Hail Mary of a record from a man who’d spent well over a decade choking on his bandmates’ dust. And I’m saying that as someone who actually likes the album. A typical prog fan picking this up will play the first nine tracks, declare themselves hopelessly bored, and have an angry rant of a comment all queued up on ProgArchives, just waiting for them to smash that enter key so they can share their sourness with the world.
But just before they do, something wildly unexpected happens. What is this song? What is it doing here, of all places?
Tony: I can’t really say why “An Island in the Darkness” should come out now. I just had these ideas, and I wanted to let them go to see what would happen. It wasn’t my intention to make it any particular length, and when I finished it I didn’t realize that it was 18 minutes long. But for some people it will be the track. There’s something about it...a sort of excitement. 4
This is 25 years of Genesis progressive sensibility bubbling over uncontrollably to the fore, with all the mastery those years bring, now unfettered by anyone telling him to edit himself down. It’s a blending of new, old, older, and timeless in one epic package; the second longest song Tony has ever done in any form after “Supper’s Ready”. Longer than any of his soundtrack pieces, longer than any of his classical works. This is it, the biggun, the hoss from the boss.
Tony: There are a few moments [in my solo career] that are worth talking about, I suppose. A very long song, "An Island in the Darkness," which lasts for about 15 minutes and perhaps is comparable to the early Genesis days more than any other, I think has the most to it. It's the most "meaty" piece... 6
It opens with just piano and nothing else. Though it sounds nothing like “Firth of Fifth”, it’s got the same kind of effect of drawing you in. There’s something really compelling about pure piano sound, and you almost don’t even notice when the gentle synth notes sweep in to texture it all. It’s an introduction that runs for nearly two minutes. “From the Undertow” was a piano introduction to “Undertow” that the other two-thirds of Genesis told him had to go, but Tony didn’t have to answer to anyone this time around. You want a two minute introduction to this piece? Go for it, man.
Tony: I write what appeals to me and follow that through with no compromises. Basically, I prefer music that has some odd quality to it… I get most excited when something a little weird is going on within a song. It might be a certain lyric or a particular chord change, but I like to put something in that steers the song away from the beaten path and leads it elsewhere - hopefully somewhere a bit more interesting. 2
From that “Firth”/”Undertow” intro sensibility it’s into “Duchess” territory, with a prominent drum machine pattern anchoring the verses and choruses of the song’s primary melodies. There’s Tony on piano, Tony on synth, Tony on synth that sounds like guitars, Tony just building on this drum pattern any which way he wants to. It all works.
Tony: It’s such an aid to writing - you get a drum loop going, play along, and see what it does for you. 4
And here after an album full of pop efforts, and after a successful career as a new wave artist before that, Jack Hues is unleashed as a progressive rock vocalist, and the haunting quality of his voice just nails the atmosphere in this track. It’s a bizarre match, but it’s somehow an ideal one at the same time.
Tony: I felt I’d written a lot of strong material for Strictly Inc., but I’m particularly happy with “An Island in the Darkness,” which was a long piece and I thought was the backbone of the album. Jack also sang a little bit the way I would want to sing if I could sing. I thought he sounded great on that track. 1
Now, it’s a pretty down-tempo song to this point. We’re definitively in the “darkness” part of the equation, the foggy gloom of the whole affair. So it feels completely natural when, after two verses and two choruses themselves spanning nearly four unbroken minutes, Tony goes into a very restrained, somber, melodic keyboard solo. If I can again draw parallel to “Firth of Fifth”, this is like the flute solo in the middle; same feel, same kind of effect. So if we’re following that formula, we’d expect the next bit to be an up-tempo bit, maybe reprising the lively piano introduction...except that, as you’ll recall, that piano introduction was also mostly melancholy and reserved. At this point the song has run for 7.5 minutes and hasn’t had a lick of pep whatsoever. It’s so good you don’t even notice, really, but by now you’re aching for something “up,” lest you wallow in this mood forever.
And so, the island in the darkness. The drum machine pattern vanishes, replaced by tight cymbal work by renowned session drummer John Robinson, who by this point in time had drummed on 17 Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits, and an additional 19 other top ten hits besides. You want solid? Let’s get solid.
Tony: The drummer is John Robinson...he’s so quick to learn. “An Island in the Darkness” is 18 minutes long and, having heard it just once, John pretty much played it straight through! 4
OK, granted we’ve just established that the first 7.5 of those minutes are just drum machine, but still! You may recall Phil Collins won the Genesis audition by hearing how something was supposed to go and then playing it right back, so it must’ve felt like coming home for Tony to get that with someone else 25 years later.
But it’s not the cymbals that you’re focused on here. It’s the flaring piano arpeggios, beaming through the haze like rays of brilliant sunlight, and though other synth tones and chords threaten to take over, ultimately they just fall in line so that the arpeggios are THE thing. Then more countermelodies, tight drumming with dramatic cymbal crashes...you wanted up? We’re going up, baby. Up and up and up on an arpeggiating journey that doesn’t want to end. You can’t get off Mr. Banks’ Wild Ride. It’s 2.5 minutes of instrumental consisting of almost nothing but keyboard solos, but to describe it as a keyboard solo would be woefully inaccurate and actually undersell the whole thing.
When it finally comes back to earth, we’re back to pure piano again, just as with the song’s introduction. Reflective, meditative, still somehow triumphant, like a weary soul resting on the shore, looking out upon the tumultuous sea he/she just emerged from. And then we’re off again into arpeggiating glory.
Except this time, Jack Hues is back, and there’s a quiet menace in his voice. “Now the fog surrounds you,” he says, undermining all that you feel you’ve just accomplished. You’ve gotten so accustomed to those arpeggios that you can almost still hear them in this chord structure, but they’re not there, and Jack is taunting you about it. “All you see are phantoms always just out of reach.” Then come the almost hypnotic suggestions: “You don’t want to be here anymore.” It’s downright eerie, I tell you.
And now he gets that hysteria in his voice that Tony was talking about. And now those arpeggios are back, but they’re coming from synth strings this time, sounding out of control, dangerous. “You cannot choose direction or control the motion.” This was supposed to be my island, man! Why am I back in the darkness again?! “Tell me are you frightened on your own?” Yes! Yes I am!
The final sounds you hear from Jack Hues on this track are a deathly wail, like he’s falling from some towering precipice to his untimely doom. ”Do you have the will to carry on?” I say final sound, because even though Jack is a guitar player and played guitars on Strictly Inc., Tony opted to bring in a familiar face for the ending of this song.
Tony: Most of the guitar on the album is played by Jack, although Daryl Stuermer plays a solo on “Island” and guitar on one other track. 4
Perhaps a Genesis collaboration of sorts after all, eh? After 13+ minutes of only occasional and subtle background guitar, Daryl comes ripping in with a solo that’s far more artistic than technical, though in typical Stuermer fashion he nails both facets with relative ease. A very deliberate kind of underlying rhythm, emphasizing the third beats of each measure just to keep you on your toes, and this solo’s gonna keep going even after it sounds like it’s about to end. “Pull back a bit, Tony?” Nah, friends. Not this time. Not ever again.
Tony: The guitar solo’s my favorite bit, the emotional high point on the album. It’s a cliché, I suppose, but it seems to work. 4
Daryl gets 2.5 minutes of his own to work his magic here, and it’s just breathtaking, especially given everything that came before. That’s the ol’ “Supper’s Ready” mentality at work here: give ‘em a payoff, even if they didn’t know they wanted it.
Tony: Nowadays everything is too concise. Everyone is working at the four minute pop song. I listen to groups that I like...and I yearn for them to take it just a little bit further. Pop music has become too rigid - you have to fit the format all the time, and I don’t think that it needs to be that way. In fact, ask the people who don’t listen to the radio what they want to hear, and you’ll find that they want something more ambitious, that’s got atmosphere. 4
Tony spends the final minute and change scaling back down. It’s piano overlaid with synth oboe, then back to the piano alone, gentle arpeggios caressing once again before it all slows and ends on a chord that hits precisely all the right notes and lasts precisely two seconds too short. It’s honestly the only thing wrong with the song, I think. It’s Tony’s second longest piece of all time and my only complaint is that it wasn’t two seconds longer. That’s a job well done, I think.
Lyrically, it’s not quite obvious when listening, but Tony positioned this piece as another vague political message:
Tony: “An Island in the Darkness” is about political situations: striving for something, getting there, and fighting to hold onto it. You know...Russia was so optimistic, and now it’s going through a much more difficult stage. The same thing will happen in South Africa - the euphoria will disappear and then, having reached the goal that seemed so marvelous, things won’t quite hold together. Many people will feel that it’s worth carrying on, but they’ll really have to fight. 4
Over the years, however, he became a bit more pragmatic about it.
Tony: I had written a long piece, and it was a good 50-60 percent instrumental, and I wanted the lyrics to follow the flow of the song, which starts in a certain place and goes darker and the end is optimistic. So, it's a song about ambition and achieving what you set out to do, and then about sustaining it, and how it goes for you after that, and how you cope with failure and all the rest of it. But a lot of people have different interpretations of the song, and I intentionally kept the song quite ambiguous, so people could put their own ideas into it a little bit. But it is about finding yourself in a place that you perhaps didn't think you would have ever been in - a good place. And then perhaps later on, finding yourself in a bad place, and then how you cope with that. 6
Sounds almost like Tony’s solo career, doesn’t it?
Tony: I was really excited by Strictly Inc. and when we listened to it when it was completed, Jack said “Well, that’s fantastic. If this was the new Genesis album, everyone would be very happy.” I felt I’d covered all bases on this album. It had some range and quality about it that made it special. Of course, I was trying to quietly shy away from me “being the man.” That’s why I put it out under the group name Strictly Inc and of course, for that reason, it didn’t do anything. People didn’t even know it was a Tony Banks album. I regret that the most about the project. I would have definitely liked it to have had a much higher profile. 1
Strictly Inc. sold about a baker’s dozen copies and then, as its title suggested, vanished entirely from whatever small pocket of the public consciousness it ever had claim to. For nine out of ten tracks on the album, that doesn’t come as a huge surprise. But ohhhh, that tenth. With the utter commercial failure of Strictly, Inc. and the collapse of Genesis as a recording band a couple years later, Tony decided to call it a day. He’d pivot over to the orchestral world, where he seems a natural fit, and his music there is great stuff. But he’d never again record as a proper solo artist, making “An Island in the Darkness” effectively the swan song of his solo career.
What a way to go out.
Tony: The important thing though is that people listen to it with an open mind… If they do that, then I think they’ll find something that will move them or excite them… 2
Let’s hear it from a middle school in Quebec!
An eighth grade teacher in the heart of French Canada had a radical idea that she could teach English as a second language to her students by playing them music. The concept goes that associating certain sounds and inflections with melodies would help them “stick” better, and as kids might like hearing these songs, they’d get built in repetition. This is sound logic, and works pretty well, and also it’s totally just lip service because what this lady REALLY wanted to do was get her kids hooked on Genesis.
To that end, she made them listen - repeatedly, one would imagine - to “An Island in the Darkness”. Whether the obsession was their own or just a homework assignment from a fanatic making dubious use of her authority position, the kids made Tony a book based on the song and wrote him a letter thanking him for, well, being Tony Banks. It’s the most bizarre thing ever, and Tony was clearly a little flabbergasted in how to respond.
Tony: I thank them for their time, and the fact that they gave it a chance. You know, you give it a listen. I mean, this isn’t...it’s not an easy piece of music; it’s not a piece of music that’s been particularly successful, either, you know what I mean? So it’s not something that you have to listen to or do anything...But I think it can speak to people because of its lyrical idea. I mean, nobody’s gonna suggest... It’s quite an open lyric; it lends itself to quite a few interpretations, I think. And obviously they found some of those interpretations within the things they wrote. So I think it’s very good. I’m very impressed. 7
These literal children write him a BOOK based on a sprawling epic off his least successful album and half his response to them is just the self-pity that the album didn’t have better sales. It’s hilarious, it’s tragic, it’s Tony Banks in a nutshell. I love it.

How TV Aerials Work

which was like counting down. And I thought that was really useful.” (FG2: Young age group, P1, male, 18 years) Overall participants expected that all media forms (print, broadcast, online, telecoms) should present information about the switchover to reach as many people as possible. Ultimately, communities communicate and word-of-mouth about personal experiences was as, if not more, trusted as information sources. Ensuring that people have the correct information to hand to be able to deal with all eventualities that are anticipated and possible with switchover was expected to be available by participants. Participants expected the level of detail provided to be appropriate to their needs (including regional specific information) and to err on the side of ‘wait and see’ to avoid consumers spending money needlessly. 7.6 Variables influencing satisfaction with messaging approach 7.6.1 Getting the most for your money For some participants choosing between the different platforms and products was a matter of value for money. Most people were already aware that set top boxes could be bought for less than £20 (e.g., via supermarkets), and many people opted for the cheap boxes. No one mentioned the relevance of the digital tick. Even those who opted for pay television were aware of the value for money aspect and were keen to get what they wanted for the best deal available, whether that was driven by particular content (channels) or by bundling with other services. “[I looked for what offered] Most channels for the cheapest price.” (FG3: Middle age group, P5, male, 41 years) “The reason I went for [pay television provider] is because [it] has the monopoly on sports. Then [other pay television provider] got on board but they don’t offer you much for your money to be honest.” (FG3: Middle age group, P1, male, 35 years) “We already had the [digital terrestrial television] boxes so we wanted as little expenditure as possible, so we carried on with what we’d got. Retune and go.” (FG3: Middle age group, P4, male, 47 years) 7.6.2 Desire to maintain a basic broadcast television service For some participants, particularly those who had switched to digital only because they had to, their needs were simple – to continue watching broadcast television after switchover. For some of these people, the wealth of information available was overwhelming and confusing. These participants simply needed to know how they could keep what they had. “Just [want] the television set. There were no underlying things going on. Just watch the sport, news. [Interviewer:
Keeping what you have] Yeah absolutely.” (FG1: Older age group, P1, male, 68 years) “I’m just confused with all of this. [free to view digital terrestrial television] and [pay television provider], it’s all the same to me, I don’t know what the difference is. I just added the box, and that’s how it is. [Interviewer: Did you see that as the simplest way for you to do it?] No, doesn’t make any difference. [Interviewer: Was it just about keeping what you had?] [he nods]” (FG1: Older age group, P4, male, 70 years) “I had to choose a way of upgrading and [free to view digital terrestrial television] was my way. [Interviewer: because?] [With pay television provider], there were too many channels.” (FG1: Older age group, P5, female, 73 years) 7.6.3 Desire to have more choice of programme content For others participants in the group, their digital television equipment decisions were based on awareness of services that afforded more choice. For most participants, popular pay television providers were top of mind and well-known and established brands. Based on what participants discussed in the groups, it appeared that they often did not make fully informed judgements and were not always actively in control of their purchase decisions; they were often in the right place at the right time for television provider sales staff to make a sale. Sales staff were often successful in winning over consumers by presenting their offer as a simple, one-stop shop. Bundled services were desirable to some participants. As illustrated in the second quote below, participants indicated that people are not comfortable with querying sales staff and could benefit from knowing the right questions to ask that are relevant to the households’ needs (e.g., recording preferences). “I chose [pay television provider] because I like certain channels [...] We could tailor to how we wanted, they were not going to go down, like other companies. I thought they have more competitive prices as well.” (FG1: Older age group, P6, female, 62 years) “I think what the problem is: we’re not comfortable at challenging the competitors at what they can offer us. I think if I go to them, they are going to offer me this, if I go to them they are going to offer me that. So we actually don’t bother, we just wander on accepting what we have. I have [pay television provider], when we moved in, that’s what we had, until we found [other pay television provider] better and cheaper. [...] it wasn’t until I ‘ummed’ and ‘arrghed’ I realised how easy it was to get.” (FG1: Older age group, P3, male, 67 years)
“I’d go under one system under [pay television provider]. [Interviewer: Why would you advise her to go for that?) Choice of more programmes, it’s just one system.” (FG1: Older age group, P1, male, 68 years) 7.6.4 Desired functionality Many participants had clear functionality requirements (e.g., recording) and made purchase decisions based on their awareness of the availability of desired function(s). Some participants were only aware at switchover of how their new television experiences were different to their old experiences, and were in the process of resolving them either before or after they had made significant digital television related purchases. “I tend to watch [pay television provider], because I’m able to freeze frame, pick up again, cancel all the advertising on the television.” (FG1: Older age group, P3, male, 67 years) “I knew I would have to do something because I wouldn’t be able to record.” (FG1: Older age group, P2, male, 69 years) 7.6.5 Simple, contract free Convenience and simplicity were important drivers for some participants. “[free to view digital terrestrial television], it’s one price, no messing about with phone lines or anything like that.” (FG3: Middle age group, P4, male, 47 years) 7.6.6 Replacing equipment For some participants, the discussion around the personas raised considerations that were perceived as relevant to decision making. For instance, some reported preferring to use switchover as an opportunity to update old television equipment rather than buying a set top box add-on. For some, notably more elderly consumers, a new integrated digital television may be the simplest, least hassle, and most easy to use option. “[Her television] is that old, she could just buy a new one.” (FG1: Older age group, P5, male, 73 years)
Technical research conclusions This study has analysed new data made available following a survey of domestic TV aerial system performance, conducted externally to this project on behalf of BERR in the first quarter of 2009. The key findings are: • The statistical performance of the domestic aerial is very similar to that determined in previous studies (1995 and 2003). • As before, aerial system gain was found to be inversely proportional to available field strength. • A trendline fitted to the data showed a dependence of -0.i on the available analogue field strength. • From this trendline, the assumed system gain of 7dBd is generally only achieved in locations where the available analogue field strength is 75dBμV/m or less. • 29% of households have some form of amplification in the system (33% for DTT, homes, 19% for analogue only homes). • Where amplification is used, it improves both the system gain and the C/N or MER. • Older installations exhibit somewhat lower system gain - a 30 year old system has an average gain some 10dB below a new installation. • Some 75% of households have grouped aerials. • There is no difference in overall gain between systems with ‘grouped’ and ‘wideband’ aerials. • Some 3.4% of households will require an aerial upgrade to receive PSB services, post-DSO. For reliable reception of all multiplexes, this figure rises to around 9.6%. 8.2 Consumer research conclusions 8.2.1 Insights relating to aerials and reception a. Most participants were aware that current roof aerials might need to be updated for digital terrestrial reception. Most reported that their awareness had been raised by a range of sources including word of mouth, newspapers and Digital UK. Some participants were aware of others in their community who had installed ‘monster’ aerials as a precautionary measure. Post-switchover, there was a sense that the significance of the aerial issue could have been down-played and that there was scope to reassure and more strongly allay fears about in adequate aerial systems. b. There was little direct experience in the groups of having replaced roof aerial systems, with the exception of some anecdotes about others. Most participants
therefore favoured a communications approach recommending people to ‘wait and see’ whether they would experience any reception issues at switchover which would need addressing, given the general expectation that the majority of aerial systems should be sufficient for digital terrestrial reception. c. A strong view that emerged, from the oldest focus group in particular, was that information regarding increased signal levels at switchover (relative to pre-switchover levels) should have been emphasised more than it was. Many were unaware the signal would be boosted at switchover, giving them improved reception with their current aerial equipment. Those who were aware of the power increase reported that they had been informed by sources such as the local press, sometimes too late for effective switchover preparations. There was mixed recall and recognition of receiving official switchover communications pre-switchover. d. The Digital UK leaflets shown to participants in the groups were considered both sufficient and useful, particularly for people without alternative platforms (e.g., satellite, cable or IPTV). Interest was expressed for an impartial advice source available across different media for provision of post-switchover troubleshooting information (potentially available via a pre-recorded phone line providing potential solutions to typical problems). e. There was little or no awareness of the formal aerial checkers such as the teletext test and the handheld aerial checker across the focus groups. Instead, participants reported noticing a range of indications pre-switchover, such as the signal strength monitor displayed on their (already connected) set top boxes and pixelation on their television screens, and inferring from these indications whether or not their current aerial installation would be sufficient for digital terrestrial television post-switchover. f. There were numerous reports from the focus groups of reception issues including pixelation, allocation of channels to unexpected channel positions, and loss of specific channels. Many participants reported using and persevering with equipment that gave them good enough but not optimal reception rather than fully resolving the issues. g. Use of indoor aerials was commonly reported. In fact some participants viewed indoor aerials as a first-stop solution to reception problems – to test or try out terrestrial reception with a low-cost solution. Some participants made repeated indoor aerial purchases, believing that ‘powered’ or ‘digital ready’ indoor aerials may improve their digital terrestrial reception. For some, investment in better roof aerials may have been a more effective longer term solution. h. Many participants were unaware of the transmitter from which they received their television signal. This was evinced by reports of unexpected loss of BBC2 for some participants believing that had already switched but who in fact were viewing broadcasts from a transmitter between its two switchover dates. There were several references made to loft aerials, and that with these it can be more difficult to identify from which transmitter residents received their television signals.
General insights relating to consumer experiences of switchover i. Overall, participants were prepared, often well in advance, for switchover with at least one television set already converted. Their preparedness was in the context of mixed understanding of some aspects of switchover. Post-switchover, many were still preparing for full conversion, whilst others were less bothered about converting non-main television sets. j. Direct switchover related expenditure was reported to be low and digital equipment was often purchased with switchover in mind rather than for switchover per se. Most participants opting for terrestrial television bought low cost set-top boxes. k. Participants reported that the hypothetical household ‘personas’ presented in the research groups were thought-provoking. The majority said that communications which incorporated this type of approach would benefit consumers, helping them to identify factors that may be relevant to their own switchover related purchase decisions. Numerous considerations were flagged by participants, prompted with the hypothetical households, as relevant to purchase decisions including cost (competitive pricing, a ‘good deal’), service (flexible packages; level of television consumption, regional broadcast preferences), and effort (consistency in platform and functions with existing household services, simplicity/ease). l. For the majority of research participants good value for money was of paramount importance. Perceptions of value were variable depending on whether participants wanted just what they had, or more choice. m. Most participants were pleased with their new digital television service although some cited commonly reported complaints including poor quality programming, adverts, cost, and having had no choice but to adopt digital television to continue watching television after switchover. The participants most negative about switchover were the oldest. The most informed who felt most in control were the middle aged group, and the youngest participants were most comfortable and least concerned about switchover.

2020.09.19 10:51 IrGr8 Nostalgia for Sovereigns: The King is Dead, but Maybe New Ones on “the Horizon”

(A mod wanted me to do this because of an error from a previous post that they wanted to pin)
Even before this latest crisis began, there had been a distinct trend of people in democracies losing faith in their political systems. When this wave of disillusionment happened back in the 1920s and 30s, as the problems of the era overwhelmed liberal democratic structures, fascism or communism were seen as being the answer. Many countries ended up with governments which had one or the other slant, or preferred one of those sides over the other when pressured to do so.
Now the trend is towards populist movements, such as En Marche or Five Star. Each of these bases their appeal on the same message as the fascists and communists – those politicians are only out for themselves, and are incapable of addressing the real issues affecting people’s lives. They do not want to change the system from within, but to do away with it altogether and give power to the people directly, whatever that actually means.
During a time of crisis people rally round a government because it is their only security. The government is responsible for dealing with the crisis, so even if you disagree with it and want other people in power, throwing it out will only hinder practical efforts to resolve the crisis.
But if the government doesn’t do a good job resolving the crisis, or is seen as having contributed to it, it can come crashing down very quickly as soon as people think it is safe to remove it. Germany overthrew its monarchy after losing World War One, and the map of Europe was radically redrawn afterwards, not through conquest but because people no longer believed in the political structures they had lived under during the war period they wished to forget.
We can therefore expect something similar to happen after this virus has gone away. But where are people going to go? They have tried mainstream politics and populism, and both have failed. The likes of Trump and Johnson, populists who have hijacked mainstream parties through centralist tactics, won’t be able to blame the politicians when they have been responsible for what they used to blame politicians for.
There is another option, not currently being considered but credible. People don’t really want to run everything themselves, as they don’t have the time or the inclination. They want someone with authority to sort everything out for them by redefining their country and its glories. Though the window of opportunity may be small, it is possible that rediscovering that most out of date of systems, monarchy, might give the post-Covid world what it is looking for.
Representing What’s Wrong
Most countries are now republics. Monarchies are considered relics of the past, even in progressive countries such a Sweden, which still has a king but has placed him firmly within a narrow constitutional role. It is interesting that some countries completely abolished their monarchies while others just gradually limited the power of the monarchy
An elected president or PMs are seen as more representative of the popular will, and therefore of the people. This is fine in theory, but when was the last time it happened? Presidents who are purely heads of state rather than heads of government are subject to considerable personal scrutiny.
If they are not taking sides or playing partisan roles, the public wants to know how they behave and what they think on a given topic. And if people approve, they think the president is theirs, but on the basis of their personal qualities. If they don’t, they think the president does not represent their country, even though they do, and there is no one above them to take on that role.
When the president is also head of government, they fail to live up to their billing from the first day. Some people agree with their policies, some don’t. They end up representing the divisions within people rather than the people themselves, and even if they are generally approved, and gain international respect, they are again seen more as transient people, often out of touch with daily realities, rather than embodiments of what their countries aspire to be.
Furthermore, most presidents have very little effective power, which is why some gain a reputation as autocrats for trying to gain more control. In practice they can easily be bought and sold by more important players, whether they are bigger countries or business, or even criminal, interests. If not, they can be removed by those same interests in favour of someone more pliable, as we saw in Ukraine, and see all over Africa and South America on a distressingly regular basis.
Restoring monarchs won’t solve those problems overnight. But the present crisis is highlighting what monarchy is about. Kings and queens don’t have constituents and paymasters to satisfy. No matter what is going on around them, it is their duty to serve the country, not a sectional interest, and treat all their subjects as equal, without fear or favour.
Emperors With Clothes
This concept still exists at a subliminal level. For example, when Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was made the first Commissioner of Baseball after the 1919 “Black Sox Scandal”, he insisted on a lifetime contract so that he would not be dependent on favourites who could keep him in the job, and disdain those who would not vote for him anyway.
Consequently Landis was considered impartial, and successful in cleaning up baseball. Neither impression is more than partly correct, but by taking on the form of a monarch he was thought to represent something higher than the conflicts of the men below him.
Similarly, the term “tsar” is returning to common usage in a way unthinkable to those who got rid of Nicholas II. When a problem gets really bad, there is talk (leaked by governments usually) of appointing a “tsar” to clean it up – a “drugs tsar”, or a “regulatory tsar”. These individuals often had predecessors who were not called tsars, but were given the title when they assumed or demanded wider powers than politicians could theoretically give them, in order to do the right thing without being hindered by political realities.
In countries which remain monarchies, the general public often has little idea what the monarch actually does. Successive British Prime Ministers have thought on being appointed that their weekly audience with the Queen would be like an afternoon off, discussing this and that over tea, until they discover that the Queen wants to know every detail of policy, and why it has been adopted rather than an alternative.
Royal families are also patrons of huge numbers of charities. This is not because they are sharing their wealth, but because the concept that they represent their country, however nebulous the notion of their country is, gives others the impression that the charity has positive values.
This was thrown into sharp relief by the decision of hundreds of charities to drop Prince Andrew as their patron after his association with Jeffrey Epstein, and various unproven allegations, were made public. A royal just shouldn’t do those sort of things, so he no longer fulfilled his function, even though he held the same title and had the same connections as before. It wasn’t about him personally, as it would have been if he had been a politician, but what he stood for, as something higher and more valuable than a mere politician.
Furthermore, deposed royals often still act as if their monarchies still exist, because it is who they are and what they do. The pretender to the non-existent Portuguese throne, Duarte Pio, is not recognised as the rightful heir by many Portuguese monarchists, who have different conceptions of how the king should be appointed based on different historical precedents.
But he is still invited to represent Portugal, though unofficially, at international events in preference to the country’s political leaders. Most notably, he was invited to Syria by Assad in 2011 on what Assad termed a “state visit”, although Duarte Pio is merely a private citizen. He is also active in many cultural organisations, seen as more representative of his country than a politician, as culture is shared amongst all people and political views are not.
Reality is Progress
So where might monarchies make a comeback as an alternative to failed politics? The big problem is that in most of the world a presidential system is considered more “modern”. But it only takes one hereditary ruler to change that perception, and some are trying.
King Simeon of Bulgaria was exiled in 1946 when the communists abolished his throne. He returned in 1996 and was elected Prime Minister in 2001. He couldn’t work miracles, and ruined his political party by going into alliance with the former communists in 2005. But the former king is still a widely respected figure for who he is, rather than his political errors.
If Bulgarians feel their system has failed them, which is why they objected to his “Grand Coalition” with the old guard, restoring the monarchy is the progressive and realistic alternative. Rather than going back to a past few remember, King Simeon and his heirs offer a stable future instead of a continuing present they know only too well.
In 2009 Georgia celebrated a royal wedding, as the two branches of the Bagrationi dynasty were united two hundred years after it had ceased to rule the country. Prince David and Princess Ana have subsequently divorced, but do have an infant son, who is the unchallenged heir to the rival claims of both Bagrationi branches.
This marriage had been promoted by the Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II, as a means of potentially restoring the monarchy to resolve the country’s never-ending political crisis. He had a valid point: whether people agreed with monarchy or not, everyone recognised its historic legitimacy, whereas significant numbers of Georgians have routinely declared each government illegitimate and unrepresentative, regardless of its deeds, since independence.
Statehood is still an issue in Georgia, as the politicians and population cannot agree on what sort of country it should be, regardless of its deep and enduring cultural traditions recognised by all communities. Restoration of the monarchy would enable them to have those arguments whilst retaining national and international integrity, as it is those traditions, which are more respected than the modern state or its politics, which a monarch would be representing.
The Middle East still has a number of monarchies. Even in Iran, one of the few examples of a monarchy being removed by a genuinely popular revolution, there is nostalgia for what the shah represents, though less for the deeds of Shah Reza Pahlavi or his dubious dynasty.
Burma, or Myanmar or whatever you want to call it, has had constant inter-ethnic conflict since it regained independence in 1947. Much of this is not attributable to historic conflicts but the behaviour of the British who conquered it in 1885: the traditional British “divide and rule” tactics, and subsequent broken promises to those groups they had deprived to begin with, created the seeds of the conflict which continues today.
Burma used to have a monarchy, whose expansionist policies had created this multiethnic state. The last king, Thibaw, was deposed by the British in 1885, on the grounds that he was drunk and incapable, although he didn’t actually drink at all. Since then his descendants have been airbrushed out of history, though most are still living in modern Myanmar as private citizens.
Military government of a particularly nasty character lasted a long time in Myanmar because it was the lowest common denominator which the population, and the rest of the world, could accept. With the democratic government elected with so much hope having gravely disappointed due to the ethnic conflicts, restoration of the Burmese monarchy would again be a progressive option in a country which has seen all other ways out turn into dead ends.
Unlimited Sovereignty
Monarchies went out of fashion for many reasons. But a common complaint in democracies is that no matter who you vote for, nothing changes.
What the people want isn’t delivered by those they think are expressions of their will. Monarchs represent something people are, not something they have, and in a time when people are losing their jobs and homes, but are still the same people, this idea is beginning to resonate.
Of course you can’t kick a king out if you don’t like him. But that is where constitutional monarchy comes in. Politicians have set terms, even in countries with a recall option. If you don’t like your elected leaders, who you personally may not have elected, you are stuck with them too unless you can persuade enough people to reverse the damage when the next election is due, with no guarantee you will.
People everywhere remain fundamentally monarchist–and that democracy has not delivered as hoped. When recovering from a crisis, they instinctively want to be rid of their politicians and get someone in who will transcend their petty arguments. Restoring monarchies, rather than creating presidents for life, could be the most acceptable international option for giving people what they want, whilst retaining the accountability constitutional systems provide.

2020.09.18 23:06 moncayk1 Current State of the GFAP Community

The purpose of this analysis is to summarize the state of the “Saki Sanobashi” community following the discovery of the film “Lady in the Sea of Blood.” The events, as described by members present during this investigation, will be described in full, accompanied by all available pieces of evidence and potential connections. Additionally, these findings will conclude with an evaluation of the validity of such claims and prominent researchers involved. Whether you believe in the existence of this anime or not, one cannot deny that the search has been plagued by trolls, or individuals making false assertions for their own selfish reasons. Thus, while it is important to recount recent events concisely so that everyone knows where this group stands, it is just as crucial to provide all of you with the tools needed to decide for yourselves what is true and who can be trusted.
To begin, on Sunday, August 30th, 2020, user D393268 posted a thread on SakisanNoBashitsu about the movie “Lady in the Sea of Blood” as a way to demonstrate that “there is a lot of obscure shit out there, from animation to live action films, waiting to get discovered. Specially in the horror experimental genre, which is not made for everyone and the distribution is limited.” By the next day, such a finding caught the attention of prominent user Chris_Able, who was especially interested in this film’s alleged depiction of a woman’s death in a bathroom. Although this clearly wasn’t “Go for a Punch,” the thematic similarities between this movie and the anime prompted user Charlmarx to purchase the DVD from the distributer Twisted Danger.
https://www.twistedanger.com/lady-in-the-sea-of-blood
However, even though Charlmarx would not receive his copy until Sunday, September 6th, 2020, giving access to the DVD in full, D393268 actually provided his copy of the film to Chris_Able, which he then shared on Tuesday, September 1st, 2020. In summary, the movie follows a woman for roughly 30 minutes as she brushes her teeth and bathes in blood in a bathroom. Ultimately, that is all that you need to know, as the full content of the movie is not relevant to the rest of this summary, but if you would like to see it for yourself the link is provided. Additionally, for anyone who is interested in this film in particular, it has been confirmed that this is actually the second of five in a series of difficult to find Japanese movies.

Now, the true importance of finding “Lady in the Sea of Blood” came when its distributor, Twisted Anger, was successfully contacted through their business email by Chris_Able on Monday, September 7th, 2020. The notion was that their experience in unearthing rare cult, horror, and exploitation films could prove useful in finding this lost anime. Thus, in order to bring in the other researchers, Chris_Able asked the Twisted Anger employee to come to the “Go For A Punch Search” discord server to discuss further. Within 10 minutes this individual agreed, and shortly after joined as user TwistedAnger. Through their conversation with the community, the employee not only relayed that “Lady in the Sea of Blood” had a lost related anime, but also provided them with the following indexed links from their proprietary software.
https://traffordac.co.uk/php/index.php?script=docClickThru.php&link=//wsaarjnn.best183video.info
https://www.liveleak.com/view?i=e89_1493788133
http://xfiction.org/game-builds/Transylvania0.2.14_public.html
https://darkanimeinc9k9v9b0kbikbbvk0ikb0fi.onion/anime/go-for-a-punch
The first link results in a 404 error message when viewed publicly, yet TwistedAnger stated that the site mentioned “9 Girls stuck in a bathroom while their parents try to find them.” The second link was unable to locate any LiveLeak video, but TwistedAnger said the index mentioned a “BIZZARE ANIME where 9 girls COMMIT SUICIDE FOR 5 DAYS!” The third link actually does work, leading to a game that is unrelated, but came up because of dialogue somewhat into the game mentioning the number “9” and the word “locked,” among other search terms used. Lastly, the fourth link is a deep web site, by Dark Anime, that is no longer active but appears to be the most promising find here. Although no one in the community could access the website, the Twisted Anger employee was contacted the following day to learn more. This individual revealed that the index was from 2013, pre-dating the 4chan original poster, and exported the page so that Chris_Able could host it publicly. The site, which can be viewed below, presents a dead Streamable video link, a brief summary of “Go for a Punch,” and a 1986 origin date for the anime. If real, this is definitive proof of the anime existing.
http://sakivideos.tk/ConfirmedLeads/lead-no-001.html
This situation ultimately becomes more complicated, when on Tuesday, September 8th, 2020, the TwistedAnger discord account was hacked, and then banned by Chris_Able. Sadly, this community is familiar with such trolling attempts, the original discord server previously getting hacked and deleted. Nevertheless, all of the findings were provided before TwistedAnger was hacked, and the employee has spoken to Chris_Able, and user Kaiser (Charlmarx), about the situation over a private email given to them over discord. This post-hacking conversation even resulted in recovering the original Dark Anime logo, which is provided below. All in all, this leaves the community with first, the knowledge that content similar to “Saki Sanobashi” does in fact exist, although live action, and second, potential next steps. Many members have been reinvigorated by this discovery, now looking into a surface web Dark Anime website in the Wayback Machine with the same logo for clues and turning to potential sources for the anime like torrent sites or cult anime distributers.
Dark Anime Deep Web Logo: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/756072429876543498/756304896520749066/unk34535345345345nown.png
Dark Anime on the Wayback Machine (Features Logo Above / Found by User Lidkas): https://web.archive.org/web/20040515143313/http://www.darkanime.com/da/index.html
Lastly, before addressing the validity of these recent findings, the original deep web site is noteworthy for being titled “Dark Anime,” a source which the search has seen before. On Thursday, July 30th, 2020, Chris_Able found an entry in the Wayback Machine from the website Share Your World mentioning “go for a punch” as a video. The site, which is one of the internet’s earliest video sharing services, was archived in 2007 in this case, with the video not saved. This alone was not enough to prove the existence of this anime at the time, as “go for a punch” is a phrase that could easily be attached to something else. Then, on Monday, August 31st, 2020, Chris_Able dove deeper into this finding, as requested by others, examining the source code, where he found that the video was added to Share Your World by none other than “DarkAnime.” Sadly, before this connection could be definitively made with the deep web site and recently discovered surface web Dark Anime site, the entry disappeared from the Wayback Machine, leaving only the following screenshots taken by Chris_Able. Currently, the general consensus from the community is that trolls, which have relentlessly attacked the search process, “mass emailed” the Wayback Machine and got this specific link taken down from the platform.

Altogether, one could argue that these findings are the most significant breakthrough in the investigation in years, yet, because this is the internet, nothing can or should be taken at face value. For this reason, when compiling this information, I turned to a variety of researchers and admins in the community in order to understand the situation from as many angles as possible, including Chris_Able himself. Despite this, if you are to believe the information in this summary, it requires faith in Chris_Able, who provided nearly all of the concrete evidence throughout. For this reason, investigators seemed mixed on the current state of the search, with some choosing to trust Chris_Able, seeing him as a dedicated, hard-working member of the community, while others were feeling a healthy sense of skepticism. For example, it was brought up that Chris_Able may have participated in attention seeking behavior in the past, and that his reddit account was made on Tuesday, June 30th, 2020, four days after the creation of SakisanNoBashitsu. None of these individuals were willing to outright state that Chris_Able is faking anything, simply bringing these up as potential concerns to consider. In the end, there is no way for this summary to confidently determine Chris_Able’s character, yet it must be stated that no one was able to corroborate his findings. Above all else, he is the only one that saw “go for a punch” mentioned on Share Your World, and the only one to have spoken directly to Twisted Anger about joining discord. Whether his screenshots are real, and user TwistedAnger is authentic, it is up to you to decide where you stand on this matter.
With that said, it is crucial to also consider potential defenses for the claims made by Chris_Able, working towards ideally proving anything that he has stated. One such attempt I have made is reaching out to Twisted Anger myself in order to confirm that they have been in contact with Chris_Able and can verify what their account allegedly stated on the discord server. It would be best not to bombard them, so I do not recommend anyone else reaches out. Similarly, after speaking to a computer programmer friend about the potential software discussed, he believes it would be possible for it to exist, yet it would likely be expensive; and when speaking to Youtuber BrutalityWillRule 666, who specializes in extreme horror movies, he had heard rumors of an anime related to “Lady in the Sea of Blood.” When it comes to issues with the Wayback Machine, users are waiting to hear back about the page potentially being taken down. For those with mixed feelings about the investigation at this time, this is possibly the most glaring point of contention. Some have argued that you would need a DMCA Takedown Notice to have any changes made, which seems unlikely here, while others have stated that if enough people complain about a page, it can get deleted. Past trolling attempts make the latter possible, but one could argue that a far simpler idea is that it just never existed, and there doesn’t seem to be any sign of major troll activity recently anyways. Finally, it’s always possible that Chris_Able was user TwistedAnger, but the latest piece of evidence from this source was the deep web logo for Dark Anime that ended up matching a figure on the surface web Dark Anime site, which Lidkas found. If Chris_Able is a troll, he’d be playing the long game, expecting someone to find the website, dig through it, and connect “his” logo back to a random sprite found on the site. Similarly, Lidkas points out that they had to specifically request the deep web index, likely not receiving it otherwise. The assumption here being that if Chris_Able made the index himself, he would be eager to show it off, thus having no reason to sit on it. Overall, my point is it can be just as convoluted to believe Chris_Able as it would be to deny his legitimacy, so all I can do is present both sides.
Chris_Able’s Own Update on SakisanNoBashitsu: https://www.reddit.com/SakisanNoBashitsu/comments/ipd3jy/update_5_darkanime_deep_web_site/
Nevertheless, I can leave you with two conclusive pieces of information that should define the search as it continues. First, “Lady in the Sea of Blood” is an existing, real Japanese film covering the same topic as “Saki Sanobashi.” This alone proves that the themes allegedly present in the supposedly lost anime are not outlandish, nor absent from other media. Similarly, it was only just found by the community after all this time, proving D393268’s point in their original thread. Second, whether or not the deep web version of Dark Anime existed, or if “Go for a Punch” was on Share Your World, there was in fact a surface web Dark Anime site. As far back as 2000, this domain was home to countless hentai, and 18+ Japanese-based videos, images, and games. No matter the legitimacy of Chris_Able’s claims, it cannot be denied that he brought us somewhere concrete, and if any source could provide a new lead, it would be this Dark Anime site.

2020.09.18 19:43 Kaiyunakai Vale Speculations about Battery Day with Tesla making headlines

Wanna Play $TSLA but no Money? $VALE
TLDR: $TSLA is likely partnering with $VALE to produce the insane quantity of Nickel needed to make Tesla’s vehicles, this is almost certainly happening for the following reasons…
READ FULL BEST DD ON WSB
>>>TESLA NEEDS NICKEL<<<
If there is one to take away from this post, it is the fact that Tesla vehicles need nickel and insane quantities of it. No one is better equipped to supply nickel to Tesla than $VALE. During Tesla’s Q2 earnings call, Elon painstakingly laid out how badly they were looking for a nickel producer.
“Well, I’d just like to re-emphasize, any mining companies out there, please mine more nickel. Okay. Wherever you are in the world, please mine more nickel and don’t wait for nickel to go back to some long — some high point that you experienced some five years ago, whatever. Go for efficiency, obviously environmentally-friendly nickel mining at high volume. Tesla will give you a giant contract for a long period of time, if you mine nickel efficiently and in an environmentally-sensitive way. So hopefully this message goes out to all mining companies. Please get nickel.”
>>>THE STARS ALIGNED<<<
The following points are largely circumstantial evidence, however when stacked together create an extremely powerful narrative and points toward the extreme likelihood of $VALE actually having lined up a revolutionary deal with Tesla.
Quotes from Tesla Q2 2020 Earnings Call
“There’s so much to be excited about. It’s really hard to kind of fit into this call, but the sheer amount of hardcore engineering, especially on the autonomy and the manufacturing/engineering front is mind-blowing. And then of course there’s Battery Day, which is coming up pretty soon. And I think that’s really going to surprise people by just how much there is to see.”-Elon Musk
“Yeah. The real limitation on Tesla growth is cell production at affordable price. That’s the real limit. So that’s where — we’re going to talk about — a lot more about this on Battery Day because this is a fundamental scaling constraint. And any part of that supply chain or processing at the cell level will be a limiting factor. So whatever it may be, anywhere from mining to refining — there’s many steps from refining to cathode and anode, cell formation. Whatever the choke point is, that will set the growth rate. And so we expect to expand our business with Panasonic, with CATL, with LG, possibly with others, and there’s a lot more to say on that front on Battery Day.”-Elon Musk
Please get nickel.”-Elon Musk
“Like the thing that bugs me the most about where we are right now is that our cars are not affordable enough. We need to fix that. So we’re all making progress in that regard, just sort of steadily gaining progress. So yeah, we need to not go bankrupt, obviously. That’s important, because then we’ll fail in our mission. But we’re not trying to be super profitable either, obviously, profitability is like 1% or something, just 1% or 2%. It’s not crazy. Last quarter, it was only like 0.1%. So we want to be profitable. Like I think just we want to be like slightly profitable and maximize growth, and make the cars as affordable as possible, and that’s what we’re trying to achieve.”-Elon Musk

Battery Breakdown
Philippe Houchois — Jefferies — Analyst
“Yes, good afternoon. Thank you. You mentioned a few times about the constraint to growth is battery capacity still. And I was hoping you could clarify the scope of the Berlin plant you’re building right now. Will there be — the battery capacity consistent with the amount of assembly volume you expect to come out of Berlin? And if not, will you be able to source your battery requirements out of Europe? Will you have to import batteries from outside Europe to ensure production in Berlin?
Elon Musk — Chief Executive Officer
Okay. We can’t say too much about this, except that there will be local cell production, and that will serve the needs of the Berlin factory. Drew, is there anything…?”(TeslaRati by Joey Klender)
$VALE mines nickel in Brazil, Canada, Indonesia and New Caledonia making it the LARGEST producer of nickel. VALE has joint-venture refineries in China, South Korea, Japan, the UK and Taiwan. These locations will help deliver nickel to the Tesla factories in North America, Berlin and China.
Future Nickel Demand
According To Tesla CEO Elon Musk, This Metal is The New Gold
The demand and future of nickel will continue to grow for the foreseeable future. Electric vehicles and other modern technology NEED nickel to function.
“With demand expected to increase from 2.2 million metric tons to somewhere in the range of 3.5 million to 4.0 million metric tons by 2030, the nickel market could become constrained.”-McKinsey and Company By Marcelo Azevedo, Nicolas Goffaux, and Ken Hoffman

Elon Musk’s Emphasis on “Environmentally Friendly”
During the call and clip that was hyperlinked above, Elon emphasizes the demand for an “environmentally friendly” mine. Historically, we all know mines have run into trouble with being friendly toward the environment. Today more than ever, a company's concern for the environment must be vocally expressed and physically acknowledged. If not, the reporters and media will bash Tesla for not being environmentally sensitive. Elon Musk understands this and is aware that the nickel company Tesla chooses must at least appear as if they are environmentally “sensitive". Vale’s website has information on how they are sustainable and conscious of the controversies surrounding the mining industry.
“Given Tesla’s focus on sustainability, the company is likely to prefer to buy from miners of higher-grade nickel sulphide, which requires less power to process than laterite ore, said Lachlan Shaw of National Australia Bank.”-Reuters, Yilei Sun, Melanie Burton“There are three key suppliers - Brazil's Vale VALE3.SA, which operates in Canada using some hydropower, Russia's Norilsk Nickel GMKN.MM and BHP Group's operations BHP.AX in Western Australia. "Vale is in the box seat," he said.”-Reuters, Yilei Sun, Melanie Burton
Just the appearance and attempt to be environmental is enough to scare away most journalists who are looking to make a hit piece on Tesla. To wrap it up, Vale has the efficient, sustainable, and environmental mining that Elon Musk is looking for.
